🆕 Out now in Health Policy and Planning! Please see our paper coming out during the final stretch of COP29 negotiations Climate and health: a path to strategic co-financing? As we round up COP29 in Azerbaijan, the message is clear: climate change has a detrimental impact on health, and there must be a move towards greater health and climate co-financing. The evidence shows us that climate change and the effects associated with climate change significantly affect health expenditures for governments, health insurers, and households. In order to address this challenge, we must look towards collaborative, innovative, and sustainable financing strategies. Key messages from the paper: 💡 There is potential for greater promotive co-financing, through global aid, allocating health budgets to climate goals, expanding benefit packages to cover climate-sensitive conditions and adapting provider payment mechanisms to promote climate conscious behaviour. Climate finance can also be earmarked for health. 💡 Efforts towards integrative health and climate co-financing through adaptive social protection and regional contingency funds should be explored. 💡 Increased cross-sectoral collaboration, additional funding and skills for climate integration in health sector plans and budgets, and mainstreaming health within climate adaptation and mitigation plans, together with measuring co-benefits are needed to support co-financing.
