#WorldBuildingOfTheWeek - The new town hall of Trofa, a small city located about 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of Porto, consisted of the renovation and expansion of an old industrial building. Completed in 2023, Trofa Town Hall was designed by NOARQ | José Carlos Nunes de Oliveira, who answered a few questions about the project. WA: What makes this project unique? JCNO: This is a difficult question that I would rather not answer. Explaining how my building is unique requires a reflection that might come across as self-praise. I believe this answer should come from others. Moreover, I think all projects are unique—uniqueness is inherent in each building, and in my opinion, it's not necessarily an architectural quality in itself. WA: What is the inspiration behind the design of the building? JCNO: I don't know... Maybe the inspiration comes from the history of architecture, from the history of Trofa, or from books, literature, and art—pieces that leave us in silence. Perhaps it's from Vitruvius, from Portuguese constructive traditions, from the emptiness of the industrial ruins on the site, the dim light of romanesque churches, or the soaring light of Gothic cathedrals. #SwissBuildingOfTheWeek - VERVE ARCHITEKTEN GMBH have designed a house for communal living between a copper beech and a listed building. These three factors – tree, monument and community – had a significant influence on the design, said Roman Tschachtli and Florian Prinz. WA: What is special about this construction project? Florian Prinz: The task combined everything architects dream of: creating space for "mixed-age, communal living" in the garden of a listed building. It involved social aspects, internal densification, monument preservation, and respect for the impressive trees. The challenge was ensuring the existing beauty of the building and garden remained intact. WA: How does the design respond to the location? Roman Tschachtli: The floor plan is the maximum buildable area, taking into account the building lines and the minimum necessary building distance. The design responds to the listed building and the tree by pulling two corners of the facades far down. On the one hand, this prevents a kind of "ravine" from forming between the two houses, despite the minimal building distance. On the other hand, this leaves room for the copper beech, and the new building crouches under its mighty crown. The Future of Work Academy at Ambiente 2025 brought together architects, interior designers, and office planners to explore the evolving workplace. Held on February 8–9, the innovation area—designed by Messe Frankfurt, MTTR Architekten + Stadtplaner, and World-Architects—offered valuable insights into the balance between physical offices, remote work, and collaboration. With eight expert lectures and interactive World-Architects Short Walks, attendees explored new perspectives on office planning. A special highlight: participating architects could earn training points through recognized Chambers of Architects. #WorldBuildingOfTheWeek - The second edition of the Islamic Arts Biennale opened to the public on January 25, 2025, at the Western Hajj Terminal of King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, where it will be on display until May. New for this edition is the AlMusalla Prize, an international competition for a small prayer space, won last year by a team led by EAST Architecture Studio.⁠ The architects answered some questions about the project.⁠ WA: What makes this project unique? EAS: The project honors Muslim architectural heritage, reimagining worship spaces as modular, sustainable, and community-driven. Inspired by regional weaving traditions, it uses recycled date palm materials to form a loom-like courtyard structure, symbolizing togetherness in prayer. This adaptable space will be open to all visitors throughout the Biennale. WA: What is the inspiration behind the design? EAS: Titled “On Weaving,” AlMusalla brings together three disparate histories: the legacy of courtyard typologies in spaces of worship, the tradition of using date palm trees as building material in Saudi Arabia, and the art of weaving, referencing ancient textile making techniques, indigenous to the Gulf region. #GermanBuildingOfTheWeek - The Ihmelsstrasse school complex in Leipzig is a real district center and increases the quality of life of the local people. The architects Norbert Zimmermann, Alexander Krippstädt and Ralph Hengst explain how they expanded the existing campus. WA: What is special about this building project? Norbert Zimmermann: Our design integrates the new spatial program with minimal intervention, enabling both the secondary school and grammar school to share spaces efficiently. The concept allows flexible room allocation, adapting to student number fluctuations. WA: What is the inspiration behind this project? Alexander Krippstädt: Our design concept centers on creating a school campus that supports all-day learning and community engagement. We aimed to design a space that encourages both individual and group learning—intellectually, emotionally, and socially—while also offering areas for rest and relaxation. #WorldBuildingOfTheYear2024 - The Nokha Village Community Centre in the Indian state of Rajasthan received the most votes in our poll for World Building of the Year 2024! Designed by Mumbai's Sanjay Puri Architects, the rural building near the village of Nokha consists of a library and community space serving people in Nokha and nearby villages. The small building makes a statement with its curving, ascending form that embraces a courtyard and integrates a roof garden. The winner, the Nokha Village Community Centre, has a small footprint of just 9,000 square feet (836 m2), but its reach is large, as it serves 144 small villages near Nokha, the municipality about 175 miles (280 km) west of Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan.
