rethinking, rebuilding, regenerating coral reefs

Info

We rebuild coral reefs. Sustainably. Scientifically. With artistic vision. Our innovative, modular structures are designed to restore and promote reef life and serve as coastal protection barriers. Our reefs recreate the lost 3D-framework of a damaged reef, restoring reef ecosystem services such as fish stocks, tourism, biodiversity, and coastal protection. We achieve this goal by combining artistic vision with scientific rigor, and the newest 3D printing technologies.

New diver alert! 🚨 rrreefs digital marketing specialist took her PADI open water diving course in #kotao, Thailand to become an SSI certified scuba diver 🤿🥳 The 2.5-day course taught her how to be a confident and skilled diver, assembly and use of scuba gear, diver etiquette, and how to react in emergency situations underwater. After a day in the pool and a theory exam, Cassandre Wuarchoz jumped on board a boat and headed out to sea to start her true diving experience. 🛟⛴️ Cass encountered a lot of stunning #marinelife during her dives, including, pufferfish, triggerfish, and a variety of different corals. Some were bleached and some were thriving 🪸🐠🐡 All the team at #rrreefs are divers and they hold a range of different certificates, from beginner right the way up to instructor. Every employee has the chance to build a reef alongside local partners and members of the community once a year. This is a great opportunity for them to improve their diving and building skills as well as collaborating with the local team. ❓If you could learn to dive anywhere in the 🌍, where would it be and why❓   #coralreefs #oceandecade #SDG14 #climateaction #biodiversity #scubadiving

We are excited to share a glimpse of our Ecuadorian adventure through the eyes of our field team, where science, community, and passion converge beneath the waves 🌊 Our project highlights not only the beauty of restoring coral reefs but also the power of collaboration. Together with the team from Conservación Marina Ecuador, our mission is to regenerate the low diversity natural reef off Isla El Sucre. This is a great opportunity to build in the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean and test our modular structure in a new marine ecosystem. Working with local partners and communities underpins everything we do at #rrreefs. We believe that #socialimpact and #environmentalimpact should go together, hand in hand 🤝 Conmar and the local fishermen have been fundamental in supporting our reef regeneration project in the Ecuador and now it’s your chance to come on board and help. ❓Will you show your commitment to the Ocean❓ ➡️ 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗳 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 🫶 www.rrreefs.com/your-reef   #savethereef #marinelife #oceandecade  #SDG14 #climateaction #climatechange #biodiversity

We are looking for partners to build our biggest community reef so far🪸🧱 Our first project in 2025 will regenerate 100m² of degraded reef structure in the Philippines, and you can be part of this collective effort. Supporting over 25% of all marine life, #coralreefs play a fundamental role in the health of our planet. Current projections highlight the risk of losing 90% of the world’s remaining coral reefs by 2050. Our mission is to slow down this decline and provide corals with a new home. Our reefs are designed to increase #biodiversity, support marine life, and create a positive social impact for local communities. You can see fast, tangible results, with fish gathering as we build the structure and the first baby corals settling just months after implementation 🐙🐠🐡 Join us and regenerate the ocean, one reef at a time: 🔹starting at 1m² for 3,000 CHF (discounts available for larger areas)  🔹receive pictures of the reef and your personalised digital certificate  🔹enjoy 3 years of biodiversity monitoring 👉 Get in touch and learn more about how you can be part of the initiative: www.rrreefs.com/your-reef #rrreefs #ReefRegeneration #MarineConservation #Ocean #ESG #CSR #Sustainability #BlueEconomy

Another huge milestone for rrreefs. We have just completed our latest 6-month monitoring on our pilot reef in Colombia which has been in the ocean for 3 years 🪸🇨🇴 Check out the incredible marine animals that have made a home in our reef structures in San Andrés! This vibrant underwater ecosystem is bustling with life, each species playing a unique role in restoring balance to the reef. From a juvenile stoplight parrotfish to elk horn coral, our reef has become a sanctuary for so many sea creatures. We’ve recorded French angelfish, sea anemones, and even a smooth trunkfish 🪸🦐🐠🐡 We will be sharing the scientific monitoring results from one of our latest projects in Ecuador in the coming weeks, this will showcase the first 6 months of marine life on the reef. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions on our projects and #scientificmonitoring. #coralreefrestoration #oceandecade #marineconservation #SDG14 #biodiversity #climateaction #rrreefs

Reflections on COP16 Colombia: breakthroughs for #biodiversity but key issues remain Two weeks ago, rrreefs co-founders Ulrike and Josephine visited the largest global summit on biodiversity. During the event, we hosted a session at the #ForCoral Pavilion as part of the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI), where we showcased our work regenerating degraded coral reef structures. Dr. Philipp Staudacher, Head of Portfolio at Innovate 4 Nature, also shared valuable insights on how businesses can translate biodiversity commitments into measurable outcomes. Overall, the summit ended with some significant progress agreeing on a global tax for products using #GeneticData from nature, potentially creating one of the largest conservation funds for biodiversity. Further, #IndigenousCommunities were officially included in the United Nations biodiversity decision-making process, marking a significant moment for Indigenous representation. Despite these agreements, COP16 fell short of what was needed to halt the global biodiversity crisis. Particularly, regarding nature funding and how targets would be monitored. With the accelerating loss of vital ecosystems such as coral reefs, we are sadly still far from finding a viable solution on the global stage. A special thanks to Dr. Rocío Robinson-Wiedemann and the Latinamerica Leading House from the University of St.Gallen for sponsoring this trip 🙏 #COP16 #UnitedNations #rrreefs #NatureFinancing #Oceans #CoralReefs #PeaceWithNature

rrreefs rrretreat in Wildhaus 🏞️ Last week, our rrreefs team escaped the urban hustle of Zurich and headed to the stunning landscapes of Wildhaus for an inspiring and rejuvenating retreat! Surrounded by the Swiss Alps, we immersed ourselves in nature, enjoyed breathtaking views, and took time to reconnect with each other and our mission. From team-building activities to deep-dive discussions, this retreat was all about reflecting on our progress, strengthening our bonds, and getting plans in place for 2025 📝 The retreat included presentations and break out groups, enabling us to focus on our key priorities and collaborate across departments. Each conversation sparked new ideas and insights, reinforcing our commitment to rebuilding and protecting #coralreefs for future generations 🪸🐠 Together, we're not just rebuilding reef structures—we’re building a global community dedicated to restoring and preserving marine ecosystems. We will be sharing details of our next community reef project in the coming weeks. This is an opportunity for you or your business to be part of our latest 100m2 project from an entry point of 1 brick 🧱😃 Please get in touch with Tim Day or Josephine Graf for more information. Our Co-Founder and Head of Field Operations and Scientific Partnerships Hanna Kuhfuss has had a very busy 3 weeks in the Philippines 🇵🇭 From building our new community reef to Keynote Speaker at the 3rd International Biodiversity Conference, Hanna manages all the components of our business across the Philippines. The first leg of Hanna’s journey took her to Siquijor where she checked and monitored the first reef that was built entirely by our local partners Davao Oriental State University and Coastal Conservation and Education Foundation. This was a very special milestone for us as working with local partners and communities underpins everything, we do at rrreefs 🧱🪸 Hanna continued down the coast to Pujada Bay to check and monitor our biggest reef to date, now 8 months old and full of young coral recruits. The baby corals have continued to grow, and marine life is thriving, more on this in the coming weeks 🤿🐠 The City of Mati was the destination for the 56th Annual Convention of the Federation of Institutions for Marine and Freshwater sciences and the 3rd International Biodiversity Conference. Both events were hosted by Davao Oriental State University and commanded a global list of attendees. Hanna took part in a plenary session as well as being invited to a round table discussion on the national coral rehabilitation strategy at the FIMFS. Hanna was also the keynote speaker at the IBC where she presented our 3D printed reef system, how we integrate technology and science to regenerate degraded coral reefs and our 2 projects in the Philippines. It was an honor to be selected for the role and another accolade for #rrreefs 😊 We will continue to build and extend our reefs in the Philippines across next few years and evolve our strong bonds and relationships with the government, universities and local communities. If you or your business would like to partner with us in the Philippines, please get in touch with Tim Day or Josephine Graf for more information. #coralreef #coralreefrestoration #oceandecade #marineconservation #SDG14 #biodiversity #climateaction

Last week, the United Nations COP16 Colombia kicked off in Cali focusing on #biodiversity and the Kunming-Montreal #GlobalBiodiversityFramework (GBF) adopted in 2022. 🌿🌎 A key goal of the GBF is the #30x30target, aiming to protect at least 30% of the world's land and water ecosystems by 2030. Right now, only about 2.8% of our oceans are effectively protected. Over the last days, rrreefs co-founders Josephine Graf and Dr. Ulrike Pfreundt were in Cali alongside other organizations advocating for ocean conservation and the regeneration of marine ecosystems. Stay tuned for more updates! 🌊✨ #PeaceWithNature #ProtectWhatWeLove #COP16 #Cali #Oceans #CoralReefs #rrreefs
