A Milestone for Multiple Uses Water Services (MUS) in Nepal! 🚰 SUSWA’s Technical Specialist and MUS Co-theme Leader of RWSN - Rural Water Supply Network, Narayan Singh Khawas, had the privilege of presenting "MUS Concept, Practices, Design Options & Its Institutionalization" to key officials from DWSSM/MoWS and the Finnish Embassy. The insightful discussion generated valuable recommendations to strengthen MUS design, practice, knowledge sharing, and institutionalization. A key target outcome was to integrate the MUS component into the updated Design Guideline for Rural Water Supply Schemes, which is currently under revision. For now, the MUS Presentation has been published in the RWSN library as a global advocacy resource. 📖 Explore the document here: https://lnkd.in/gFwwx4EJ This marks a significant step toward mainstreaming MUS approaches in Nepal and beyond! 🚰 Is the WASH Sector Ready for a Shift in Global Aid? 🌍 Very delighted to share this timely #researchjournal, published at BMJ Global Health, where we critically examined the #EvolutionOfTheWASHSector over the past 7 decades. Universal WASH access by 2030 remains a distant reality. Despite decades of global initiatives, #technological advancements, and #policy shifts, deep #inequalities persist, and the sector faces mounting challenges - #climatechange, #urbanization, and systemic power imbalances. 📌 As major donors signal shifts in #aid priorities and potential #fundingcuts, the WASH sector must ask itself: Are we prepared? Through expert interviews and documentary analysis, our research took a bold step back to critically examine the historical forces shaping WASH over the past 7 decades and identified 4 core themes that have driven the sector: 🔹 Technicalisation – A reliance on engineering and technology as primary solutions, often sidelining social and political dimensions. 🔹 Universalisation – The adoption of standardized, Western-centric models that don't always align with local realities. 🔹 Responsibilisation – The shift towards placing responsibility on individuals and communities, sometimes overlooking structural inequalities. 🔹 Metricisation – The dominance of quantifiable indicators, which, while valuable, can obscure broader social and environmental impacts. 💡 Why does this research matter now? If donor funding contracts, business-as-usual approaches in WASH will not be enough. This is the time to: ✅ Rethink #financingmodels—moving beyond donor dependence to blended finance, domestic investments, and local ownership. ✅ Prioritise #equity and #resilience—ensuring that funding shifts don’t leave the most vulnerable behind. ✅ Challenge the traditional development model—pushing for a WASH sector that is locally led, politically engaged, and adaptive to climate realities. This is not just a funding crisis; it's a moment to redefine how we approach WASH as a global public good. We must push for solutions that are not only financially sustainable but also socially and politically transformative. 📖 Read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/d3SgHcZ4 🔗 How should the WASH sector prepare for a shifting donor landscape? Let’s discuss. Look out for my blog next week that will look into this through a #MarketsSystemsDevelopment lens RWSN - Rural Water Supply Network Temple Chukwuemeka Oraeki Dr Amita Bhakta PhD Sandra van Soelen #GlobalHealth #AidCuts #WaterScurity #PublicHealth #DevelopmentFinance #DecolonizingDevelopment
