𝗖𝗟𝗔𝗦 is a laboratory that involves the steel foundries group 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗹 and 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗲𝘁 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗖𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 (𝗟𝗮𝗕𝗼𝗠𝗮𝗣) to develop advanced research on steel castings. 👉 Result of more than 7 years of collaboration, this common laboratory will establish a Research Center specifically dedicated to the foundry of casted steels able to face the challenges of foundry innovation. 👉The ambition of LabCom_CLAS is, on the first hand, to allow Safe Metal to position itself as a key specialist in cast steel at global level, towards the main customers who are generally groups of global size and also towards consumables suppliers or business software publishers. On the other hand, LabCom CLAS should allow LaBoMaP to strengthen its skills in the field of foundry and thus become a major player in national research on this theme. In the long term, the laboratory will become a platform able of carrying out collaborative studies dedicated to cast steel for the main markets of Safe Metal. #LabCom_Clas #foundry #dynamism #commitment #innovation #caststeel

👏 The Technical and Research and Development teams of Safe Metal have organized a new "Tech Days" meeting. Thanks to these two days spent with our customers, they were not only able to demonstrate the technical know-how of the Branch, but also strengthen the links between Safe Metal, the plants, the R&D department and our partners. These privileged moments of exchange have highlighted the quality of our collaborations and will lay the foundations for promising future synergies 😍 #SafeMetal #Commitment #Innovation #Dynamism #TechnicalDays #ResearchandDevelopment #Partnership

Value added This is where the manufacturing process of a foundry part ends, but there are still value added operations that are common to all manufacturing processes of a metal part. This is particularly the case for the machining of the parts, which enables the functional surfaces to be obtained. Most castings will be machined either in-house, by subcontractors or by customers. The machining operations depend on the design of the part and its applications. These operations can be: drilling, milling, tapping ... But also, painting which can have an aesthetic or protective function. #SafeMetal #Commitment #Innovation #Dynamism #Foundry #ValueAdded

Quality control Next comes the inspection phase, which reveals the presence of defects on the surface of the part or in the core. Surface defects can be repaired by scouring the area with an air arc and then filling the cavity formed by welding. The criteria and conditions for repair depend on the customer's requirements and the associated standard. A dimensional check ensures that the geometry of the part conforms to the definition drawing. In addition, we can carry out internal health checks by various means, such as radiography and conventional or multi-element ultrasound testing. Magnetic particle inspection can be used to check for indications such as micro-fissures on products that could affect their function and resistance over time. Finally, the conformity of the material is verified by mechanical testing, which certifies that the product complies with the mechanical characteristics requested by the customer. #SafeMetal #Commitment #Innovation #Dynamism #Foundry #QualityControl

Finishing Finishing is the set of operations that allow the transition from a raw foundry cluster to a finished part ready to be shipped to the customer. When the sprue has cooled down, the mould is broken by vibration using a breaker. The sprue is then passed through a shot blasting machine to clean the surface where sand has stuck. The cluster then has to be cut to keep only the part, for which we use oxycutting, grinding, hydraulic wedges, etc. A second shot blasting is then necessary to remove the oxide layer (scale) that has formed in the furnace. #SafeMetal #Commitment #Innovation #Dynamism #Foundry #Finishing

Heat treatment Heat treatment is a process that allows microstructural transformations to be carried out in steel in order to improve its mechanical properties through heating and cooling cycles. In fact, the part must be heated in a furnace to a defined temperature (around 900°C) depending on the chemical composition of the steel, and this temperature must be maintained for varying lengths of time depending on the thickness of the part. Then a more or less rapid cooling is carried out depending on the type of transformation that is desired, which will determine the final microstructure of the steel. There are two main types of heat treatment used in steel casting: - Normalization, which makes it possible to obtain a fine and homogeneous ferrito-perlite structure. For this, cooling is carried out in air. This produces a ductile and resilient steel. - Hardening, which produces a martensitic and/or bainitic structure. Here the cooling is done in water (or sometimes in oil). This results in a very hard but relatively brittle steel. Hardening is usually followed by tempering at medium temperature (500-700°C) in order to relax residual stresses and adjust the final mechanical characteristics. #SafeMetal #Commitment #Innovation #Dynamism #Foundry #HeatTreatment

Casting When everything is ready, the furnace is tipped to fill a transfer ladle. This is used to transport the liquid steel to the casting area where the moulds are located. It is made up of a stopper rod that opens and closes the hole at the bottom of the ladle (the nozzle) through which the steel flows. A first operator moves the ladle from one mould to another by means of an overhead crane, while the second operator controls the opening and closing of the nozzle. Once the mould has been filled, it is necessary to wait several hours or even several days before breaking the mould and recovering the bundle. #SafeMetal #Commitment #Innovation #Dynamism #Foundry #casting
