Following the completion of the pre-commissioning campaigns of the offshore sections of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) AG system (36” - 105km) and of the BPP Baltic Pipe Project (36” - 274km), in 2024 Techfem successfully delivered to Saipem the pre-commissioning service of the 𝗢𝘀𝘁𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝗔𝗻𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗻𝗴𝘀𝗹𝗲𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗴 (𝗢𝗔𝗟), a 48” 52km-long natural gas offshore connection to a floating #LNG regasification system, and designed for future hydrogen transport. The OAL pipeline links the industrial port of Mukran (Sassnitz, Germany) where the #FSRU Floating Storage Regasification Unit is moored to GASCADE Gastransport GmbH onshore facilities in Lubmin, where the gas is injected in the national transmission system. Following an overall project duration of 18 months from concept to construction, the pre-commissioning phase was sensationally carried out in 38 days. 🌊 Strengthening EU Maritime Spatial Planning: A Key to Unlocking Offshore Potential 🌊 In a recent call for greater EU cooperation in maritime spatial planning (MSP), industry groups highlight the pressing need to streamline and harmonise planning processes across European waters. For companies like ours, with expertise in permitting and routing services for offshore infrastructure, this focus on collaborative MSP represents a pivotal shift in enabling efficient project development. The current complexities in MSP, especially across different national jurisdictions, create risks for significant bottlenecks in permitting timelines and increased project costs. As the offshore sector expands—whether for renewable energy, telecommunications cables, or pipelines—the demand for clear, consistent, and sustainable planning processes is more crucial than ever. STS Permitting and Routing Expert Nicklas Andersson adds “The North Sea and Baltic Sea is becoming ever more congested with existing and planned offshore development and zoning. It is important that a holistic, long term and EU centric approach is taken to make best use of the available marine space, while at the same time not forgetting to allow for realistic and reasonable infrastructure corridors. Harmonised MSP frameworks would reduce delays and help spatial planners like us optimise route selection. As public discussions intensify around LNG's environmental impact, Robert Howarth’s latest paper provides compelling insights into its greenhouse footprint. Sometimes argued to be even worse than coal, LNG's largest emissions challenge lies not in end-use combustion or regasification but in upstream and midstream methane leaks. Howarth's analysis estimates that these leaks amount to 2.5% of gas production, aligning with the IEA's Global Methane Tracker 2024 findings of 120 million tons of methane leaked annually from the oil and gas industry—equivalent to approximately 15 times Germany’s greenhouse gas emissions or nearly a third of global energy-related CO₂ emissions (https://lnkd.in/dr_cX-9u). At StreamTec Solution (STS), we are helping our customers address these emissions by ensuring that pipelines are safe and 100% tight. Trond Gjedrem, Partner at STS, says: "Reducing methane leakage is essential for both environmental and economical goals. StreamTec Solution objective is to help our customers achieve absolute pipeline integrity, one very powerful step towards a more sustainable future". The energy industry - both fossil and renewable - continues to have opportunities to improve its carbon footprint. At STS, we recognise our role in making the industry safer and more sustainable by preventing leaks and promoting environmental responsibility across all sectors. #LNG, #EnergySector, #ClimateChange, #NetZero, #GreenhouseGas, #Sustainability, #EnvironmentalImpact, #EnergyTransition
