Helping patients and caregivers to understand medical knowledge and information by leveraging artificial intelligence

Info

We are a group of survivors, caregivers and people that have experienced the struggles with "medical jargon" first-hand. Our diverse mix of expertise and professional backgrounds puts us in an unique position to develop solutions that really matter to patients and make a real difference! Our journey started at the DayOne HealthHack 2020 with a clear problem statement in mind: Patients and their relatives often struggle with specialized terminology and the sheer amount of information available on their health conditions – e.g. medical reports, research papers, studies, and treatment brochures.

...sharing my key insights from the 1st REMEDi4ALL International Drug Repurposing symposium in Barcelona on March 2024. This conference focused on bridging boundaries and reshaping the landscape of drug repurposing (using existing drugs in new ways also known as drug repurposing or reprofiling, is simply finding new uses for existing drugs, including those that were initially unsuccessful or abandoned, to treat different diseases). My takeaways: ⭐ Drug Repurposing Landscape: ● There are around 7,000 diseases, but only 500 have treatments. ● Approximately 50 new medicines are approved each year. ● The average cost of developing a medicine is about $1.1 billion. Challenges in Drug Repurposing: ● Market failure is evident in the repurposing of off-patent drugs, as most new indications are currently on patented drugs. ● A disconnect exists between drug repurposing initiatives and regulatory pathways. 📢 Call to action: ==> 👩⚕️ For Researchers and Clinicians: Embrace patient-centric approaches in your work. Engage with patient communities to ensure that your research addresses real-world needs. ==> 📃 For Industry Professionals: Look beyond traditional models and explore collaborations in drug repurposing, especially for off-patent drugs. Work towards creating sustainable models for drug repurposing that benefit all stakeholders. ==> 🤼 For Patients and Advocates: Get involved in drug repurposing initiatives. Your experiences and insights are invaluable in shaping effective treatments. ==> 📜 For Policy Makers: Recognize and address the regulatory challenges in drug repurposing. Support policies that facilitate the repurposing of drugs for unmet medical needs. ==> 👨❤️👨 For Everyone: Spread awareness about the importance of drug repurposing. Advocate for more research and support initiatives that aim to bring repurposed drugs to the market. Let's unite in these efforts to transform the landscape of drug repurposing and bring hope to patients worldwide. Thank you EUPATI Maria Dutarte, REMEDi4ALL and my lovely peer EUPATI fellow Mandy Daly for this wonderful experience.
