Swiss Re's history in reinsurance began in 1864 with a Marine treaty. This signified the start of our 160 years and counting commitment to navigating complex risks. In 1900, Swiss Re started into what we call today the Credit & Surety lines of business. A year later, Fidelity appeared in Swiss Re's internal annual accounting summaries as a separate line of business for the first time. By 1903, just after the company's workforce surpassed 100 employees, Swiss Re expanded into Machinery insurance through a treaty with Kölnische Unfall-Versicherungs-AG, laying the groundwork for the modern Engineering insurance sector. This period also saw the beginning of Agriculture reinsurance with a focus on livestock in 1904, and by 1920, Swiss Re ventured into the Aviation treaty business. Today, our six specialty lines of business and over 200 experienced experts partner for the long term, helping clients manage current risks and proactively address future challenges such as renewable energy and cyber risks.
