The Story of the new The Home Hotel For many, Zürich is a symbol of tradition, elegance, wealth, business and banking. But there’s another angle to this city, a story of a creative revolution that still makes its mark…   In the summer of 1915, the First World War was raging. People from all over Europe escaped their homes, and some found a refuge in Zürich.   Paradoxically, times of crisis often evoke engagement, bring out creativity and brilliant ideas. That’s what happened to a group of artists who established a café, the Cabaret Voltaire, in the heart of Zürich, on February 5th 1916. This was the moment when the Dada art movement was officially born, and the somewhat conservative city of Zürich became the focal point for local and international artists and creatives, free-thinkers and rebels.   The dadaists wanted a new paradigm in art and culture, officially calling their art anti-art. They awakened the desire to question the present with new and surprising forms of artistic performance, expressed through art, music, theatre, literature and dance. Because of its open concept and various disciplines, the Dada movement was quite unstable and soon branched out into many directions. The ideas spread across the world, reaching Berlin, Cologne, Paris, Italy, Russia – and even Japan and America. However short-lived, Dada constitutes something like the Big Bang of Modernism. It paved the way for later movements as diverse as surrealism, pop art and punk; a huge source of inspiration for future art, music, literature, fashion, graphic design ...   An artistic and creative revolution, made in Zürich.   107 years later, it’s time for a new revolution – to create a new kind of hotel and meeting place in the former paper mill by the Sihl. For generations, this is where paper was produced, promoting literature and freedom of speech, education and escapism, pamphlets and poetry. In addition to this heritage, we empower the hotel with the spirit of the free-thinkers.
