Strategy and transformation advisory services for the air travel industry

Info

Air travel is a force for good. It brings people, goods and businesses closer together. Safely, every day of the year. Air travel came a long way since it was formed as a global industry in 1944, yet the COVID crisis and climate change have brutally reminded us that this industry still has a lot to deploy to sustainably serve its purpose. Thanks to over 40 years of personal travel experience and 15 years of serving the air travel industry at IATA, I became aware of the value of air travel and the incredible resilience of the industry, and I made these value and resilience the priority of my work. When leading the Transformation team and then Industry Strategy I had the opportunity to interact with senior airline leaders, to define vision and strategies at industry level and to run global multi-year transformation programs. As a humble contribution after leaving IATA I drafted a White Paper summarizing my proposals for the restart of the industry. In 2021 air travel is fighting for its survival, but it has the potential to emerge stronger. Yes, people will travel abroad soon again. Going further, I made a decision on my next challenge and have founded Threedot to provide advisory services to the companies willing to make a difference, to restart the industry and to help it serve its purpose in a more resilient and sustainable manner. I believe that my passion and experience in the commercial, financial and digital areas of the air travel industry, can contribute to the success of many companies and new ventures.

In November, the United Nations organized the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan. 66,000 attendees from 190 States met to discuss climate change. After years of hopes, like for the Paris Agreement at COP21 in 2015, and setbacks, what has been achieved this year? Here are our three main takeaways: => $300 billion for climate finance Developed nations committed to mobilizing $300 billion annually by 2035 to help developing countries tackle climate impacts. This is a big step forward, but some may ask if it is enough. As Gambia’s Environment Minister said, “The figure is shockingly too low.” Indeed compared to global fossil fuel subsidies at $7,000 billion in 2022, the announcement misses the target. => Carbon markets finally have a rulebook After 9 years of negotiations, Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement is now operational. This article creates a global framework for carbon credit trading, allowing countries to finance sustainable projects that can reduce carbon emissions. The need for a clear regulatory framework was much needed, the potential to drive change is massive, and the success of its adoption will depend on transparency and implementation. => Fossil fuel phase-out: the debate continues The call to phase out fossil fuels remains one of COP’s biggest issues. Phase-out is critical to achieving the full benefits of a transition. The host country Azerbaijan, where oil and gas represent two-thirds of GDP, faces this issue acutely. While some parties and observers pushed for ambitious commitments, others resisted to preserve their interests, showing the difficulty of balancing the current dependence on fossil fuels with the urgent need for climate action. What did you take away from COP29? Hope or disappointment?

After the Covid recovery phase, what are the main transformation areas for airports in 2025 and beyond? Four years ago, most airports were wondering if traffic would ever come back. Today, the situation is quite different: travelers are back, and growth is fast. Pre-Covid challenges are back as well: airports need to transform the infrastructure and processes to meet the increasing travel demand. From sustainability to customer experience and to automation, here are three key transformation areas for airports: 1. Sustainability: In Dubai, the upcoming solar panel installation at Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Dubai World Central (DWC) airports will feature more than 60,000 panels generating more than 60 GWh annually, while reducing CO₂ emissions by 23,000 tonnes each year. Dubai is also investing in Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), working with local partners to support the global energy transition. 2. Customer Experience: In 2022, Dubai Airport welcomed over 66 million passengers with 122 smart gates. The reported time for passengers to complete passport control procedures is… five seconds. 96% of passengers queued for less than five minutes at departure passport controls and 97% waited less than three minutes at security checks. 3. Automation: Ramp operations remain very manual and risky. AI-powered solutions (e.g. for training and maintenance) and robotics (e.g. for baggage and aircraft towing) are improving ramp operations for faster turnaround times and enhanced safety. How is your airport doing? Any other strategic transformational priority in 2025? ------- 📌 Want to go beyond the headlines? Need help with your strategy? In times of high fuel prices, airlines used to add fuel surcharges to the ticket price. With the introduction of carbon taxes and alternative fuels, how will flight prices evolve in 2025? Jet fuel price is currently at about $90 per barrel. That's below the peak of $180 about two years ago but still above the pre-Covid average (see link to IATA fuel monitor in comments 👇 ).   The new costs come from the carbon emissions derived from fuel and from the alternative fuels (called SAF) as analysed by Robert Boyle in his recent article (see link in comments 👇 ).   "where ETS prices are likely to go in the future": Robert identifies the supply and demand for carbon credits that will drive the future ticket prices. Difficult to make predictions as aviation is 3% of the full picture. 🤓   "free allowances ending in 2026", "currently only flights that are fully within the EEA/UK/Switzerland zone are covered": Robert outlines the reason for discrepancies between airlines (e.g. Ryanair has 90% of flight ASK exposed to EU or UK ETS) and for rising airlines costs. The regulations may evolve, as well as airline networks and operations. 🫠   "around a 9% increase in total revenue per passenger": Robert calculated the average cost increase per passenger, e.g. for Ryanair a €1Bn cost increase on €13Bn total revenue. The increase is significant and higher than previous occasional surcharges. 🙈   "a 2% blending mandate will add hundreds of millions of euros to airline costs": Robert assesses the impact of SAF mandates on airline costs, besides the ETS costs. The addition of new costs related to fuel and the environment is a game changer for air travel. 🫢   "Keep passing on increased costs to customers": if costs go up, and airlines pass on the cost, will travel demand slow down? How will they impact airline profitability in Europe vs the rest of the world? 🥹 #aviationsustainability #SAF #ETS

Is Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) the solution to reduce aviation carbon emissions or not? Could India become the next SAF hub? At the World Aviation Festival last month, David Neeleman, CEO of Breeze Airways, argued that “SAF doesn’t solve the problem”, that “it’s an interim solution” and that SAF “interrupts with food supply”. He concluded by calling SAF a “complete waste of money”. At the same time, major developments and investments are taking place around SAF. Large countries with thriving aviation industry, like India, are leading this transition. Currently, India imports approximately 85% of its aviation fuel. But what if India could produce its own fuel – with SAF? India has the potential to use its agricultural waste to produce SAF, reducing carbon emissions and creating thousands of “green jobs” – without competing with food supply. However, many challenges lie ahead, from scaling up production, and securing investment, to overcoming technological and infrastructure barriers, before we can make SAF a viable and cost-effective solution. What do you think? Can India meet this challenge and lead the SAF revolution? Can India eventually become a major exporter of SAF to the global market? #SAF #SustainableAviation #RenewableEnergy #netzeroemissions

The #1 item on aviation sustainability leaders’ wish list is clarity and consistency in an area currently clouded by buzzwords and confusing narratives. Is SAF reducing carbon emissions? Which regulation should apply among the EU ETS, CORSIA, and other emerging regulations? What does a cost-effective 2050 roadmap look like? At Threedot, we provide consulting services addressing today’s aviation sustainability challenges around three pillars: ✈️ Education & Readiness Assessment 📊 Sustainability Roadmap Development 🔄 Innovation & Technology Review Our goal is not only to help airlines and industry partners meet their net-zero 2050 targets but also to support the development of a clear and adaptable strategy to thrive in a rapidly evolving world. Yesterday I flew with Saudia (SV) for the first time. I’ve picked this direct flight option instead of the usual Gulf carrier route. Here is what Riyadh Air may soon compete with: 👉 Shopping: good schedule, direct day flights both ways, outbound 4pm - 11pm and return 9am - 2pm. 👉 Booking: simple return flight, on website, no issue. Seamless card payment. Booking confirmation by email with details. 👉 Post-booking: repeat messages about upgrades and extra room may be annoying. Skyteam may not have shared my travel profile and preferences. 👉 Online check-in: email prompt, no luck with mobile check-in but web check-in worked, requires detailed visa information 👉 Bag drop: no queue, travel doc and visa check, no issue. Desk manned by ground handler. 👉 Security and immigration are not related to the airline. Was smooth on a quiet day. 👉 Boarding: smooth, with jetway, no issue. 👉 Aircraft: 12-year-old Airbus 320 👉 Cabin: 15x6=90 seats in coach about 80% full, 5x4=20 seats in business, about 90% full. 👉 Seat: good legroom in coach (Pitch 32, Width 18), managed to get exit row. Reclined 2x2 seats in business (Pitch 54, Width 21), better than euro carriers with short haul 3x3 configuration (both cabins on pitch 30 and width 17) 👉 Inflight food and beverage: on par with average euro airline, below Gulf standards. Of course the flight is dry. 👉 Inflight service: good and above expectations. I asked for a drink not on the menu (cup of tea) and they brought a cup, twice 🤗 👉 Navigation: smooth flight, low turbulence, on time. Flew over Italy, Greece and Egypt, crossing the Red Sea south of Alexandria and over AlUla, which safely avoided the conflict zone of the Gaza Strip. 👉 Deplaning: by bus. The air at midnight is warm and dry. 👉 Bag delivery: did not try as VIP service by Altanfeethi (Private bus, bag pickup and hotel transfer) was arranged by the event host. Conclusion: overall good product and experience. The competition with Riyadh Air will be interesting. Opportunities lie between the lines of the story of this journey.
