For those of you who do not know Tegla's rise to fame, she "ran her way out of her village" to be the first African female gold medallist, world champion and record holder in a marathon, replacing Norwegian Ingrid Kristiansen, then the record holder: The news at the time said: "Loroupe beat Ingrid's record Rotterdam: Tegla Loroupe from Kenya ran to the winning time of 2.20.47 in the Rotterdam marathon on Sunday, and thus Ingrid Kristiansen finally lost her last world record.
