Congratulations! Juergen Bernard, head of the Interactive Visual Data Analysis Group at the UZH Department of Informatics, has been awarded a Schweizerischer Nationalfonds SNF Grant on «Personalized Visual Analytics: Human Preference Elicitation for Ranking-Based Multi-Criteria Decision Support». Together with Mennatallah El-Assady, head of the Interactive Visualization and Intelligence Augmentation Lab at ETH Zürich, he will explore multi-criteria decision support through interactive item ranking, as an understudied research direction for people lost in choosing between thousands of relevant items (cars, houses, stocks, etc.). Their Visual Analytics approach will support this complex human decision-making task by bringing together human intellectuality with the computational power of algorithms and AI in effective human-in-the-loop approaches. Congratulations to Davide Scaramuzza and his team on being awarded the Jury Award at the CYBATHLON 2024!
Last Sunday, we competed in the Vision Assistance Race at the CYBATHLON 2024—the "cyber Olympics" designed to push the boundaries of assistive technology. In this race, our system guided a blind participant through everyday tasks such as walking along a sidewalk, sorting colors, ordering from a touchscreen, purchasing a box of tea, and navigating a forest—all powered by computer vision assistance! We used two RGB cameras and a depth camera for localization and 3D mapping and semantic understanding, and a belt for haptic feedback. Our system received the Jury Award for the most innovative and user-friendly solution! Congratulations to our amazing team: Cornelius von Einem, Patrick Pfreundschuh, Giovanni Cioffi, Alexander Wyss, Roland Siegwart, Hans Wernher van de Venn, Alireza Darvishy, and especially to our pilot, Lukas Hendry! A big thank you to all our Master's students who contributed to this achievement, including Victoria Catalán Pastor and Tim Flueckiger! University of Zurich, ETH Zürich, ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences, ZHAW School of Engineering Sight Guide, University of Zurich Faculty of Science, UZH Innovation Hub, UZH Department of Informatics, European Research Council (ERC).

UZH Institut für Informatik hat dies direkt geteilt
Together with Viktor von Wyl (Institute for Implementation Science in Health Care), also from the University of Zurich (UZH), I have received a DSI Infrastructure & Lab Grant from the Digital Society Initiative for our project STAG - Statistical Time Series Analysis Guide. Sensing, such as in wearable devices, presents clinicians and UZH researchers with novel opportunities, but also with difficult challenges. The data size, complexity, and multi-modality can lead to research workflows with poor replicability and a lack of robust protocols. STAG (Statistical Time Series Analysis Guide) will empower UZH researchers by easing time series data exploration, processing, and management in their scientific workflows, increasing their rigor and efficiency. https://lnkd.in/ddKyqfzC https://lnkd.in/dY6wbH6p

Congratulations to Dhivyabharathi Ramasamy on successfully defending her PhD thesis titled «Towards AI-Assisted Data Science Development. Decoding, Visualising, and Enhancing Human-AI Collaboration for Data Science Workflows in Practice». Her thesis addresses critical challenges in data science development and presents a robust framework for empirically studying data science workflows. She investigates the challenges and potential of AI assistants, such as the GPT-4 model, in performing data science tasks and proposes methods to generate more effective coding recommendations. Additionally, she presents solutions to improve the comprehension of data science code. Through these contributions, her research paves the way for smarter tools to support data scientists using computational notebooks and advances AI-assisted development in the field of data science. We wish Dhivya all the best for the future! #PhD #thesis #DataScience #GenerativeAI #AIAssistants #HCI #ifiuzh
