🌍 NEWS FROM RIYADH 🇸🇦 — UNCCD COP16 — For a long time, the WWF Global Food & Agriculture Practice team has been mobilizing stakeholders to elevate the importance of grasslands, savannahs and rangelands in global conservation action. Tbe UNCCD COP16 has embraced this agenda and I have never seen these biomes receive so much attention before in a COP. Equally, the collective voice of pastoralists is echoeing everywhere in COP16 around a common agenda to conserve these biomes that, for many, are the source of their livelihoods. My colleague Leonie Meier , who leads WWF’s Global Grasslands and Savannahs Initiative spoke to CNN about this. The island of Runde in Norway is home to more than 200 bird species - including Gannets, Shags, Puffins, Razorbills, Oystercatchers and many more. But their home is being overrun with plastic ghost gear - discarded at sea and collected by the birds to build their nests to raise their young. This is not the way it is supposed to be.
