YES-Europe
Erneuerbare Energie & Umwelt
Connecting Energy Leaders - Students and Young Professionals International Network
Info
Young leaders in Energy and Sustainability. YES-Europe's vision of the future is a world where energy is more sustainable, accessible, and secure. Our role to make it happen is to build a stronger community of future energy leaders across disciplines and countries through online and in-person opportunities. We do it because we are certain that the only way to do it is together. YES-Europe grew out of an initiative at EPFL (Switzerland) that brought together 50 students from 9 European countries in May 2016 for the first YES-Europe Annual Conference to find ways to make a difference. Since then, a strategy team has been working to push further the development of the organization in more than 10 countries organizing local and international events.

It was an enormous highlight of my year to tune into COP29 Azerbaijan proceedings as a Virtual Badge-holder this month, courtesy of our incredible COP Team at YES-Europe 🌟 It was even more sparkling to see our masterful COP29 Project Lead Inez Brogowska artfully moderate a UN Climate Change Side-Event titled ‘Youth-Driven Innovation: Transforming Cities and Regions for a Sustainable Future, with accomplished contributions from Margarida Canavilhas Marques (European Youth Energy Network - EYEN), Mahesh Pandya (Paryavaran Mitra), Efua Nyamekye Appiah (Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO)) and Simbarashe T. Gwenzi (YEC Fund (Y4C ‘23)) 🌳🤝 The interactive workshop spotlighted and promoted youth-led sustainable urban solutions, by providing a platform for young leaders and university ecosystems from developed and developing countries to share best practices and strategies to empower youth in fostering resilient development in their region. Lydia Sanz Lozano and Prof. Francesco Corvaro were exceptional in their opening speeches and deliveries too 🌃 I was most excited to see Ayodeji Stephen’s speech during the panel on collaborative pathways to scale green infrastructure, renewable energy and climate resilience across sectors through skill-building and partnerships. As YES-Europe’s Lead for our EU-AU Energy Transition Concept, Ayodeji is set to have an empowering 2025 as our focal-point to drive meaningful youth connections and actions across Europe’s and Africa’s energy sectors 💡 A huge thank you to Politicnico di Torino and Paryavaran Mitra for supporting the event and to our great friends at the European Youth Energy Network - EYEN for collaborating with us again on another landmark project. I am eager to see how our 2 organisations can create even greater experiences for our members in 2025 and beyond - Leonardo Cangelmi did a superb job in delivering Panel #2 of the side-event as well 🚀🌍 A big congratulations to our COP Team on the ground in Baku of Inez, Elizabeth Chavdarska, Karina Sorana Caraus and Filippo Angarano, with brilliant support throughout 2024 from Siti Aziz and Joshua Bierschbach for their analysis, research and externalisation - I hope COP29 will remain a treasured experience for you for many years to come ✨ Stay tuned to our YES-Europe LinkedIn, Instagram and website to engage with our COP Team’s experience at this year’s event! 🇦🇿 (Images sourced from the live stream broadcast of the COP 29 Platform App)

The policy proposals from the European Youth Energy Forum 2024 have been finally released: https://lnkd.in/d9JQq-qx or on European Youth Energy Network - EYEN website: https://lnkd.in/diNx2HaQ Each proposal is based on specific challenges identified through an internal process of brainstorming, 8 weeks of online workshops and improved as a result of the World Cafè methodology, after being challenged by panellists and invitees. The participants proposed to: 🟢Develop the Community Energy Ambassador (CEA) program to create a formal, paid position active in small-size cities to bridge communities and local or regional stakeholders, ensuring that community members gain access to the benefits of energy-saving programs, renewable energy sources, and subsidies. 🟢Synchronise Demand-Response and retrofitting efforts to more quickly engage a greater number of homes and residents in the transition in four interconnected steps: - Mandating the creation of Demand-Response schemes by large energy suppliers; - Introducing Energy Flexibility Certificates (EFCs) and standardising control technologies; - Guaranteeing minimum energy standards in new builds and rentals; - Providing zero-interest retrofit loans to residents. 🟢Establish the Green Commute Initiative (GCI), a tax-efficient scheme that enables businesses to incentivise sustainable commuting options for employees in cities, aiming to reduce private vehicles use. While governments won’t directly fund infrastructure, they support a positive feedback loop where an increase in sustainable commuting both demands and financially allows for infrastructure development. 🟢Structure a Framework for University-Powered Energy Communities (UPEC) to leverage the skills and expertise of university students, connecting them with local stakeholders to develop and/or manage energy communities. The aim is to improve energy performance and comfort, support and expand local renewable energy initiatives and support households in any other endeavour to tackle energy poverty (social or legal needs for instance). 🟢Connect small and medium size cities with various investors to finance their projects in CLUSTER-HUBs to present non sector specific project portfolios to investors, who can select the one that best matches their investment preferences and risk profiles. This approach ensures that essential, smaller-scale projects receive the funding they need to advance the energy transition, including smaller or less attractive initiatives. 🟢Develop “The Urban Green Credit System: A Digital Incentive Model for Sustainable Urban Actions” through an innovative digital application platform that empowers young urban residents to actively contribute to sustainability. The system aligns individual efforts with city-wide environmental goals, by incentivizing green actions fostering a culture of sustainability and rewarding users via redeemable credits for choices that lower emissions and improve urban energy efficiency.

Deputy Coordinator, Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU | COP 29 | LLM Energy and Climate Law | Energy transition, infrastructure and net-zero cities
Reflecting on my experience at #COP29 in Baku, I am filled with inspiration. This gathering of passionate individuals united by the urgency of the climate crisis reminds me of the collective potential when collaborating across borders, sectors, and generations. While representing YES-Europe, I had the privilege of organising an official UNFCCC side event titled Youth-Driven Sustainable Cities: Advancing Just Transformations of Urban Systems. The gathering brought together an inspiring panel of youth leaders, academics, and practitioners to discuss innovative pathways for making urban systems more sustainable and inclusive. Together with our speakers we emphasised the importance of empowering youth to take action in creating liveable, sustainable cities for generations to come. Thorough the conference, I was proud to learn from global changemakers at European Youth Energy Network - EYEN, Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe, Swiss Youth for Climate and YOUNGO. The innovative ideas shared, and the commitment to action reaffirmed why the inclusion of youth voices in decision-making is non-negotiable. The conference also allowed for reconnecting with organisations like Forum Energii, engaging in bilateral meetings with organisations such as International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), and learning from a diverse global community across delegation pavilions. While the outcomes of this year's conference are far from desired, I’m excited to continue working with this vibrant climate community and cannot wait to carry the lessons of COP29 forward. ✨
