On January 20, 2009, Thomas Viguier and I covered the historic inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States. Having arrived in Washington a few days earlier after a road trip from New York, we discovered a bustling capital despite the bitter cold. On the Mall, an emotional crowd celebrated this symbolic moment, marked by the departure of George W. Bush and Obama's unifying speech, focused on modernity and the economic crisis. The day's coverage, vox pop and encounters extended to the presidential balls. An unforgettable experience for two young French-speaking reporters who witnessed history in the making. Here's the story of this episode, and a bit of its background too. #Obama #TheWhiteHouse #USGovernment #inauguration #investiture2009 https://lnkd.in/eG8DKt75

As the 47th President of the United States arrives, the world is watching Geneva, questioning the future of multilateralism. 🌍 Since 1945, Geneva has welcomed many U.S. presidents: 1955: Dwight Eisenhower, the pioneer. 1977: Jimmy Carter, for Middle East peace talks. 1985: Ronald Reagan met Mikhail Gorbachev in a historic summit. George Bush Sr. & Bill Clinton—Clinton visited four times! 2021: Joe Biden met Vladimir Putin, reviving Geneva's role as a hub of diplomacy. What’s next for #InternationalGeneva?

Re-election of Donald Trump: What Consequences for International Geneva? January 23, 2025, at 12:15 PM Domaine de Penthes, Chemin de l’Impératrice 18, Pregny-Chambésy A conference featuring: Charles Adams, former U.S. Ambassador and attorney in Geneva Stéphane Bussard, journalist, Le Temps Daniel Warner, Swiss-American political scientist Moderation: Luisa Ballin, journalist accredited at the UN and geneveMonde.ch contributor Isabelle Falconnier, Director of the Swiss Press Club What impact will Donald Trump's re-election have on International Geneva? Will the human rights capital become a target of the new U.S. president's fight against the multilateral system, driven by his "America First" agenda? During his first term, several organizations faced his criticism, starting with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and its Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). With the United States contributing more than a quarter of the UN budget, are the concerns of UN agencies and the WTO justified? For more information : https://lnkd.in/dRVNbKPt

Flag at half-mast at the United States Mission (photo Claude Zurcher) To pay tribute to their former president Jimmy Carter, who died on December 29 at the age of 100, the United States will observe a national day of mourning on January 9. In addition, flags will be flown at half-mast for a month, starting January 4. This is the case at the US Mission in Geneva. Photo taken from the entrance to the grounds of the Château de Penthes.
