  • Dolomiti Valtellina in the Italian Alps are set to host the next Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in 2028. This decision was taken by the IOC Members during the 143rd IOC Session in Lausanne, following a presentation by the project leaders. Dolomiti Valtellina 2028 will be the fifth edition of the Winter YOG. Competitions will take place only in existing venues across three clusters in Valtellina, Trentino and Cortina, returning to some of the iconic sports venues that will be used for the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026. The 2028 YOG will be part of the Milano Cortina 2026 legacy, and will reinvest in communities with strong winter sports traditions. • The Olympic programme has changed considerably since the first Games of the modern era in 1896. The programme for the very first Games of the Olympiad included nine sports and 43 events (an event being a competition in a sport, resulting in a ranking and the awarding of medals and diplomas), while Tokyo 2020 featured no fewer than 329 events across 32 sports. The Winter Games programme has also evolved, with 109 events on the programme of the Beijing 2022 Winter Games, in comparison to the 16 events at the first edition in Chamonix in 1924. In his article “The Olympic Programme”, Jean-Loup Chappelet, Professor emeritus at the Swiss Graduate School of Public Administration of the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, examines the evolution of the Olympic Games' roster of sports and events and explores the reasons behind modifications to the programme, the criteria for including or excluding sports, and the role of the IOC Olympic Programme Commission in these decisions. The article also delves into how the process for altering the Olympic programme has transformed over time, providing insights into its current state and the challenges it faces. The article, part of our "Olympic Knowledge - Essential Readings Series", is available on the Olympic World Library here https://lnkd.in/eWQ59uky Find the entire "Olympic Knowledge - Essential Readings Series" here https://lnkd.in/de-CSEEK, and for more information on the Olympic Programme, please consult our Reference Document “The Olympic Programme Evolution” here https://lnkd.in/ej8qqPJs, and our dedicated Zoom-In page here https://lnkd.in/emxmaDTq
