Innovation at the University of Zurich has a long tradition: basic research is the ideal ground for discoveries and innovative inventions. 13 Nobel Prize winners of the UZH have changed the world with their scientific achievements. And even today, numerous inventions from the university's various disciplines successfully lead to new products, services and applications for the benefit of society. The innovative strength of the UZH is reflected not least in its manifold research collaborations with business and industry partners as well as more than 300 active licenses. And every 2 months a spin-off company is founded. To promote innovation and entrepreneurship even more systematically in the future, the UZH Innovation Hub serves the central platform for innovation and entrepreneurship at the University of Zurich. One goal of the UZH Innovation Hub is to boost intense innovation activity, such as the clusters Biomedicine and Life sciences, Digitalization, Space & Aviation, Research Infrastructure – with other strategic theme clusters to follow. The second goal is to assist UZH students and researchers to turn innovative ideas into a venture. To do so various building blocks are decisive: Skills & Knowledge, Infrastructure, Network & Advice and Capital & Financing. Accordingly, there are entrepreneurship programs, trainings as well as advice and consulting services for prospective company founders. Furthermore, in conjunction with specific funding and support, the UZH Innovation Hub seeks to help researchers and students take their first step on the path to starting a company and realizing their entrepreneurial vision.

3rd Zurich Sciencepreneur Meetup: A Fantastic Evening at Balgrist! 💡 Last night, Balgrist University Hospital had the pleasure of hosting the third edition of the Zurich Sciencepreneur Meetup. Our hospital transformed into a buzzing space for innovation, connection, and big ideas in Life Sciences, Biotech, Medtech, and Digital Health. 🏥 The event started with an insightful keynote speech from FimmCyte AG that set the tone for the evening. After that, startup pitches and booths showcased the creativity and determination driving the life sciences space forward. What a "Future Day" / Zukunftstag! 15 children joined us at the University of Zurich to learn more about entrepreneurship (course fully booked). Together we developed ideas on very practical topics, such as “environmental pollution”, “homework finder” or “early school starts” (all suggestions from the kids). The participants went full throttle with Crazy 8, 100 Dollar Design Thinking methods and a first business model! Who knows who will become a future researcher or entrepreneur?

INNOVATOR MORNINGS I Last Tuesday, our innovation community had the opportunity to learn from Florian Kuebler, co-founder of LEND - Switzerlend AG, at our Innovator Morning. Florian is an Universität Zürich | University of Zurich Alumni that advocates for building sustainable startups where the mission is not money per se but the intention to make a change. He encouraged the students and researchers at UZH to make use of non-dilutive funding available in the academic innovation ecosystem. In doing so, he made it clear why: «Once you take your first external franc, it’s not purely your company anymore. REVIEW LERU | Active participation in the discussion of EU innovation agenda The League of European Research Universities (LERU) is an alliance of Europe's leading research universities. The Enterprise & Innovation Policy (ENTE) Group, which focuses on EU innovation policy matters, recently held its meeting hosted by Elisabeth Stark, Vice President of Research at the Universität Zürich | University of Zurich. Together with Dr. Maria Alejandra Olivares, Head Innovation, they welcomed 16 LERU universities from across Europe. "At a time when the focus is on increasing Europe's competitiveness, the ENTE Group is of great importance for an active participation in the discussion on the EU innovation agenda", emphasized Kurt Deketelaere, Secretary-General of the LERU. Two inspiring days chaired by Maria Olivares and Koenraad Debackere! 🌟 One of the program highlights: A “captains of industry session” with a keynote from Airbus Defence and Space followed by a panel discussion on new space economy and technology. The University of Zurich is driving this topic forward through the collaborations between the UZH Space Hub, the Switzerland Innovation Park Zurich and various players from the industry and the startup sector. 🌟 The meeting also spotlighted on best-practice topics, such as ethics in the age of disruptive technology and venture capital perspectives on university startups.
