Do you ever go through a fast food drive-through, and wish that their "go wraps" came with fish? I do.
The good news is-- you don't have to start a petition, or any kind of food revolution-- to get a fish wrap to go. The solution is MUCH easier, and more satisfying.
Pack it yourself.
That's right-- pack a fish wrap for your lunch! It even works on road trips, camping trips, or as a quick backpacking meal.
These easy fish wraps are customizable, portable, and an easy, healthy lunch option!

Fish Wraps: Why Choose Sardines?
When I tell you that you can pack fish for lunch-- your brain might not have gone straight to sardines. (Then again, maybe it did-- I knew we were friends for a reason!)
But-- sardines are an AWESOME option. Why?
First of all, they have very low levels of mercury, and are an incredibly eco-friendly option. (That's a win, and another win!)
Did you know? The EDF and EPA recommend limiting tuna to 2 - 4 servings PER MONTH because of elevated mercury levels.
Why else should you choose sardines? They are SO CONVENIENT! The pop-top tins don't need a can opener. Sardines that are packed in high-quality olive oil make it easy to waste NOTHING, because you can use the packing oil in your recipe! (For these fish wraps, we'll use it for a quick and easy dressing.)
Which high-quality sardines do I choose to eat? I get my sardines from King Oscar. King Oscar’s Wild Caught Brisling Sardines come in both a standard size tin (just under 4 ounces) AND they also carry a half-size snack size tin!
I was especially excited about the snack size sardine tins-- because they're the PERFECT size to use for these fish wraps!
So-- if you're making one fish wrap, grab a snack size tin! If you're making two wraps, or want extra fish on your wrap-- a standard-sized sardine tin will be just the right size.
Sardine Wraps in the Office
If you bring fish into an office for lunch, you may be inclined to apologize for the "fish smell" to each and every person who walks by. (I know I've done this. "I have tuna for lunch. I'm so sorry.")
With these wraps, you don't need to worry.
Simply prep the veggies and dressing at home, and then don't open the sardines until you're ready to eat. Assemble your fish wrap, rinse out the empty tin, and throw it away.
No one will be the wiser-- and they might even be jealous of your tasty-lookin' wrap.
Fish Wraps on Vacation
The next time you're planning a long road trip, think fish. When you plan your next camping or backpacking trip-- just remember-- sardines!
Sardines are easy to pack, the tins don't have to be kept cold, and they're a delicious source of protein and iron-- and that makes them an awesome decision for camping and hiking trips!
Tip: Check the recipe card notes for tips on how to make these wraps work for each situation.
These tasty little fish will keep you happy, full, and satisfied wherever the road of life may take you-- whether it's to the office, or all the way to the top of Everest.

Sardine Fish Wraps
Ingredients
Fish Wraps:
- 1 10" flour tortilla
- 2 ounces sardines packed in olive oil, oil reserved (Half of a 4-ounce can) King Oscar Brisling Sardines recommended
- ½ ounces fresh spinach (1 small handful)
- 2 cherry tomatoes, halved
- ¼ avocado (optional), or use more to taste Skip for "on the go" preparations
Honey Mustard:
- 1 teaspoon mustard
- 1 teaspoon honey
Instructions
- Warm tortillas. Add the sardines (without the oil), spinach, tomatoes and avocado (if using).
- Add the mustard and honey in a small bowl and stir together. Add the reserved oil, and stir again.
- Pour the dressing into the wrap, and serve immediately.
Notes
- At the Office: Prep the veggies at home the night before, and add the mustard, honey, and salt to a small portable container. Warm the tortilla in a microwave if available. Rinse out the sardine container immediately to prevent "fish smells" in the office.
- On a Road Trip: Pack the veggies ahead of time, and store in a cooler. If desired, swap the homemade dressing for a premade honey mustard, and discard the oil from the sardine tin. Store the empty sardine tin in sealable disposable bag to prevent "fish smells" in the car.
- While Camping: Heat the tortillas on a camp stove, directly on the flames for about 5 seconds, until they begin to bubble up. Use metal tongs to remove the tortillas from the burner.
- While Backpacking: Skip the veggies. Use a premade honey mustard, and discard the oil from the sardine tin. Store the empty sardine tin in sealable disposable bag to prevent "fish smells" on the trail.

Hubby's mind is gonna be blown! You know we are a fan of sardines in our home, but usually just eat straight out of the can. This is a fabulous way to mix up the ol lunch routine 😉

Yay!! Let me know when you try it!

I had no idea that too much tuna was a bad thing -- it's a standard here. I'm definitely going to switch it up with these King Oscar Sardines. I'm always looking for ways to add extra protein and calcium into our diets and your beautiful wraps fit the bill. Bye-bye tuna!
champagne-tastes says
Yup it's got loads of mercury! I've been trying to swap it out whenever possible! Enjoy the wrap!
Maya says
I made the wrap in the pic and it was so delicious! I wish I had taken a photo of it but I devoured it so fast! I mean, I already knew it was gonna be bomb to be honest the sardines alone will do it.

Yay!! I'm so glad that you loved it!

What a great and easy way to incorporate more sardines into your diet! My partner loves sardines and will probably be a fan of this! I'll have to give it a go for him 🙂

I love sardines. The first time I had them was in Italy and now I always have them in my pantry. King Oscar is a really good brand and I can find them here so I'm lucky. The wrap is genius! I think I would make the wrap at home, wrap tightly with plastic wrap then put it in a plastic bag or other suitable food container. Rinsing out the can before throwing it away is a good idea too. On a car trip, I think I would use your method. So glad you came up with this idea, saving for later.

I think sardines are delicious. We usually just eat them as is. We love wraps and I don't know why we didn't think of using them that way. We do a lot of traveling and they'd make perfect lunches. Thank you for the inspiration. I'll keep an eye out for this brand.

I am loving your sardine recipes! I wouldn't have thought to use them in a wrap, and now I want one for lunch! I love the notes you've provided for serving them in different scenarios. I especially love the idea to prep the wrap in advance for the office, so you can assemble and enjoy with no apologies. 🙂 I've been there myself with tuna sandwiches in the past!

I'm excited about the snack-size containers! I was just thinking about an upcoming field trip for my daughter that I am chaperoning and how she always wants to take lunchables on those (ugh) and how I needed to pack something for myself. This sounds sooooo much better, lol!

I have the utmost confidence that more and more people are going to eventually turn onto sardines—starting with recipes like this! My Mom used to eat sardines between bread with mustard and I used to gag and poke fun at her. Well, look at me now—foot in my mouth along with those sardines. Haha. People just need to be convinced, and what better way to convince people than with delish recipes like this?

I had my first sardine a few months ago and was truly surprised by how much I didn't hate it. It was delicious!. Sardines get a bad rap which is truly sad and more people should try them. I think these fish wraps are a perfect introduction to them!
Marlee says
I will admit, I have never tried sardines but I totally would love a fish wrap for lunch! I am willing to give it a try!
Sasha @ Eat Love Eat says
These wraps look so delicious! I love fish for lunch but you're right about always feeling the need to apologise to colleagues! Good to know that sardines have low mercury levels too.
champagne-tastes says
Thanks! And yesss ... but I actually ate these at work the other day without anyone noticing. WIN!

I haven't ever had anything quite like this and I am totally intrigued. I've heard sardines are fantastic in place of other types of fish for many recipes, and these wraps look incredible! Thanks for a great recipe!
Carol Bronson says
I didn't have any tortillas so I toasted sourdough bread instead. Great sandwich. But please recycle the tin can instead of throwing it away

I usually have sardines as an open faced sandwich on rye toast, but I love this idea of a wrap. Your instructions say to add the avocado, but the list of ingredients doesn’t contain avocado. How much avocado is meant for this recipe?
Sarah Trenalone says
Good catch, I fixed that. Thank you! I use about 1/4 of an avocado (or 1/2 if it's a small avocado), but you can use as much or little as you like. Hope you enjoy!
Marguerite says
Well, this is delicious. I was excited about trying it and it never occurred to me to check so soon for an answer on the avocado, so I made it for lunch and we just finished it. I added some thin sliced radishes for crunch. Next time I will try it with avocado. Thanks for a great recipe!
Sarah Trenalone says
I'm so glad you enjoyed!! And you're very welcome 😀
