Must watch.. #Transformative interview between Afolake Oyinloye and Dr. Malle Fofana on how African nations can ensure equitable access to #greenjobs opportunities across both urban and rural areas and overcome challenges in scaling #green solutions.
🌍 Africa’s Green Economy: A Game-Changer for Youth Employment 🌱 By 2030, Africa’s green economy is set to generate 3.3 million jobs, with solar energy and climate-smart agriculture at the forefront, according to a report by FSD Africa and Shortlist. This transformation presents a powerful opportunity to tackle youth unemployment, as the continent's youth population is projected to surpass 800 million by 2050. To explore this potential, I had the privilege of speaking with Dr. Malle Fofana, Global Executive and Africa Director at the Global Green Growth Institute. We discussed how African nations can ensure equitable access to green job opportunities across both urban and rural areas and overcome challenges in scaling green solutions like solar energy. 🔑 Key Insights from the Conversation: 1️⃣ Equitable Access to Green Jobs: Urban areas can focus on large-scale renewable energy projects such as green construction and electric vehicle infrastructure. Rural areas benefit from decentralized solutions like off-grid energy, which create opportunities in installation, maintenance, and sales. Bridging the skills gap through vocational training programs in renewable energy technology and green construction is vital. 2️⃣ Scaling Solar Energy: Challenges like financing, technical capacity, and grid infrastructure must be addressed through public-private partnerships, local manufacturing, and grid expansion. Success stories from countries like Kenya (Lake Turkana Wind Project) and Senegal (solar irrigation systems) highlight the importance of replicating proven models across the continent. 3️⃣ Nature-Based Solutions: Initiatives such as reforestation, agroforestry, and wetland restoration create jobs in conservation while combating climate change and preserving biodiversity. Examples include Ethiopia’s tree-planting campaigns and Kenya’s agroforestry projects, which combine environmental sustainability with economic opportunities for local communities. 💡 The Road Ahead: With the right policies, partnerships, and investment in capacity-building, Africa has the potential to become a global leader in green job creation while addressing pressing environmental challenges. 📺 Watch the full interview with Dr. Malle Fofana here: https://t.ly/XHF9o 📢 How do you see Africa’s green economy shaping the future of work for the continent's youth? 🌱 🌍 #ExcitingNews: With the Government of Togo through the Institut National de la Statistique, des Études Économiques et Démographiques (INSEED), and GGGI Togo Country office, we successfully hosted the initial participatory workshop on #GreenGrowthIndex in Lomé, Togo 📝 For two days, experts, specialists, and stakeholders from different Ministries, the Private sector, civil society, and non-governmental organizations identified indicators relevant to creating Togo’s National Green Growth Index! 🔍 Main Insights: 📌#GreenGrowthIndex Indicators: through participatory sessions and discussions, experts identified and confirmed a list of indicators spanning four dimensions of #GreenGrowth: efficient resource utilization, natural capital preservation, green economic prospects, and social inclusion. These indicators will form the basis for developing Togo's Green Growth Index. 📌Data Availability Check: Newly identified indicators will be assessed for data availability, and further online workshops will be organized to fill any gaps and complete the indicator list. 📌Next Steps: In the upcoming webinar, GGGI Team will work with the country to review the data for newly proposed indicators and enhance them with input from national experts. This will be succeeded by the calculation of initial index outcomes, which will be confirmed in a subsequent participatory workshop in Togo. 🌱✨ The Green Growth Index is an evidence-based tool for evaluating the impact of green growth policies and investments in a country, focusing on indicators tailored to that country’s unique environmental, economic, and social contexts. In Togo, this exercise is aligned with the country’s National Strategy for Sustainable Development. 👏 Thank you to all who participated and contributed to the success of this workshop. Your knowledge, commitment, and dedication to #GreenGrowth are creating a path toward a more sustainable, greener future in Togo. 🌿 #GreenGrowthIndex Global Green Growth Institute Lilibeth Acosta Dr. Malle Fofana
