Ecosystem health and biodiversity are fundamental to our societies, economies and human existence and sadly, in many instances are on the decline. Our oceans are already facing the reality of their very own ‘homeless crisis’. Whilst diving recently, our Technical Director John Thorogood came across this spine-cheeked anemone fish set against the background of its host, a bulb-tentacle anemone. Although the stark white of the anemone really shows off the flamboyant colours of the anemone fish, unfortunately, this is evidence that the anemone has recently bleached. In technical terms, this means it’s expelled all the single-celled algae (zooxanthellae) that both give the anemone its typical colouration of brown, green or purple and provide the anemone with a significant portion of its nutrition through photosynthesis. Bleaching of anemones is caused by the same stressor as bleaching of corals – elevated water temperature. Where this photo was recently taken, off New Ireland, Papa New Guinea, water temperatures have been several degrees higher than usual for many months. It’s possible the anemone will gain sufficient nutrition by capturing small crustaceans and fishes to survive and re-populate its zooxanthellae – but it’s more likely that it will die. In which case, this anemone fish will be homeless and just another victim of climate change. The current decline of natural capital poses a substantial risk to business and the global economy. Fortunately, a renewed focus on environmental sustainability in business is driving change that seeks to address this decline and the impacts on our oceans. The 18th of October marks World Menopause Day. Menopause is a significant aspect of women’s health, and its effects extend far beyond the individual. Colleagues, partners, friends, and family members are often indirectly impacted, which is why raising awareness and fostering a supportive environment is important for us at SLR. A deeper understanding of menopause helps break down stigmas, enhances collaboration, and creates an inclusive culture where everyone feels supported. Due to lack of support, experiencing menopause can often be a driver to women stepping back in their career, or even leaving the workforce entirely.
