Asahi Kasei's biodegradable nonwoven fabric, Bemliese, is used in activities to restore the marine environment. Eelgrass, a type of seagrass known as the "cradle of the sea," supports marine life and absorbs CO₂. However, eelgrass beds in Tokyo Bay have significantly declined in recent decades, leading to a loss of biodiversity, a deterioration of water quality and a progress of climate change. To address this issue, local governments, NPOs, companies, and research institutions are collaborating on initiatives to restore eelgrass habitats. In November, approximately 40 participants, including employees and their families from companies participating in the "Tokyo Bay UMI Project," took part in a seed-sowing event. During this event, Bemliese was used for planting the seeds of eelgrass. Bemliese, made from cotton linter, biodegrades within weeks to months through the action of microorganisms in soil and seawater, ensuring it causes no harm to the environment. Divers planted Bemliese bags filled with eelgrass seeds in the seabed to promote growth while preserving the natural ecosystem. The event also featured environmental education activities, where children observed marine plankton using digital microscopes. This hands-on experience led to their curiosity and understanding of ocean ecosystems. The seeds of eelgrass will germinate in the seabed and bloom next spring. Monitoring will continue to be conducted, primarily by NPOs, to ensure that eelgrass continues to grow well in the future. #Sustainability #BlueCarbon #Bemliese #AsahiKasei #OceanConservation #CSR

We are proud to announce that a licensee of Asahi Kasei technology begins commercial production of high-purity carbonates using CO2 as main feedstock. Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical, the licensee, started commercial operation of a new carbonates plant in China in November. The plant uses technology licensed from Asahi Kasei for the production of high-purity ethylene carbonate and dimethyl carbonate with carbon dioxide as a main raw material. Both carbonates are used as electrolyte solvents in lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles. The plant has the capacity to use 54,000 tons of CO2 per year as feedstock. Hiroyoshi Matsuyama, Senior Executive Officer of Asahi Kasei and President of its Environmental Solutions SBU, comments : “By licensing this technology for a more sustainable production of these important materials, we will continue to focus on the practical application of our expertise in the field of CO2 chemistry and contribute to a sustainable society by providing solutions to the world's environmental challenges.” In the early 2000s, Asahi Kasei developed process technology to produce various chemical products using CO2 as a main raw material. The technology has been licensed to chemical companies globally, with the first licensee starting the production of polycarbonate using CO2 in 2002. Since then, Asahi Kasei has been expanding its expertise in the field of CO2-based production of resins and other chemicals, including carbonates. This milestone underscores our commitment to driving sustainable innovation and advancing solutions that address global environmental challenges. Together with our partners, we look forward to building a more sustainable future. Hall elements are widely used for image stabilization and autofocus in smartphone cameras. The growing demand for high-quality photos has led to an increase in the number of cameras integrated into smartphones. This trend has heightened the need for ultra-compact components that support advanced functionality and high-resolution capture within limited spaces. To meet this need, Asahi Kasei Microdevices (AKM) has launched mass production and shipment of its next-generation InAs (indium arsenide) compound Hall element, the HQ0A11. The HQ0A11 features AKM's smallest and thinnest package size for an InAs-based Hall element, measuring 0.8 x 0.4 x 0.23 mm and achieves an 85% reduction in volume compared to the previous model of HQ0811. We anticipate that HQ0A11 will contribute to improved performance in smartphone camera modules, small robots, and other applications.
