Established in 2022, the AIIB Special Fund Window for Less Developed Members (SFW) aims to enhance the affordability of AIIB loans by providing interest-rate buy-downs. Earlier this month, AIIB Governor and China Minister of Finance Lan Foan and AIIB President and Chair of the Board of Directors Jin Liqun, signed a Contribution Agreement to confirm China’s USD300-million contribution to the SFW. 🌍 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀-𝗕𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗞𝗮𝘇𝗮𝗸𝗵𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻 🌍   A USD840,000 grant that seeks to help the Development Bank of Kazakhstan (#DBK) prepare green and cross-border infrastructure financing was approved by the #MCDFGoverningCommittee during its meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The project will be implemented by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). The #MCDF grant will fund activities to assist DBK in enhancing and implementing its environmental and social management system (#ESMS). The enhanced ESMS will apply to a non-sovereign backed on-lending facility of up to USD100 million provided by AIIB. The objective is to build DBK’s institutional capacity to conduct environmental and social (E&S) due diligence that complies with standards required for financing by AIIB and other International Financial Institutions (#IFIs). As 2024 draws to a close (an incredibly successful year for AIIB and Treasury), it is unfair to single out any individual among a fantastic treasury team who have delivered on all fronts: strong funding campaign, portfolio management and returns, large transaction volumes, growing multi-currency business, and vastly improved reporting and ALM. The list could go on.   I will however contravene this principle to acknowledge Darren Stipe, Gregory Knipping, Liam Carden, Joel Spenner, and their teams for their work in partnership with Euroclear, Citi, and BMO Capital Markets, which allowed Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) to bring the largest USD denominated Digital Bond (DNN) to be issued by a supranational. USD300 million was issued in August and a tap in October brought total size to half a billion dollar.   They worked hard and persevered to prepare for the deal, my initial skepticism among their challenges. I had a thousand questions, they provided a thousand answers. Eventually, they convinced me to take this extra step. There’s nothing wrong with changing your mind when that is supported by open dialogue, facts, ponderation of risks and rewards. Will blockchain become standard at some point in bond issuance? Looking forward to 2025!

A USD525,000 grant that aims to build the institutional capacity of Bangladesh’s Eastern Bank PLC. (EBL) to prepare sustainable infrastructure financing was approved by the #MCDFGoverningCommittee during its meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The project will be implemented by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). The #MCDF grant will fund activities to improve EBL’s environmental and social management system (#ESMS) and practices, including a project-level grievance redress mechanism. The enhanced ESMS will be the first infrastructure-focused (non-sovereign backed financing USD50 million) on-lending facility provided to EBL by a multilateral development bank.
