Record Chinese exports before the New Era of Global Trade in 2025  President-elect Donald Trump is threatening to impose 10% additional tariffs on all goods from China. “On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social. to punish the nation for not following through on promises to institute the death penalty for traffickers of fentanyl.  In the short term, the prospects of these or even higher tariffs are likely to drive Chinese exports to a record, as companies try to get their goods into the US before Inauguration Day on Jan. 20. Post January 20th the trading landscape will look very different with many companies looking to shift supply chains to avoid heavy tariff burdens. Once the tariff landscape and retaliatory actions are more clearly understood the business impacts can be calculated. Mexico Confident in Growth of Global Sourcing and Procurement Mexico is investing in a major expansion of the Port of Manzanillo on the country’s Pacific coast, with plans to more than double its capacity and become one of the top 20 container ports in the world. The expansion is seen as a show of confidence in the growth of global merchandise trade, despite threats of tariffs from the US and concerns about Mexico's trade with China, according to the full report by Bloomberg’s Alex Vasquez in Mexico City. The Mexican government is pushing back against criticism from the US and Canada, with President Claudia Sheinbaum insisting that her government has a plan to substitute imports from China with locally made goods and that Mexico is not being used as a back door for Chinese goods into North America. Potential for New tariffs to be Applied to Goods transiting through Chinese owned Ports Goods from anywhere shipped through Chinese ports across Latin America would face the same 60% tariffs as those President-elect Donald Trump has promised on imports from the Asian trade powerhouse under a plan proposed over the weekend. The idea was floated by Mauricio Claver-Carone , an adviser to the presidential transition who served as Trump’s senior official for the region during his first term in the White House. As CEO’s and company executives listen to the latest ideas being floated on tariff structure and implementation. The calculation being made in many boardrooms is, how much of the communication is pre negotiation rhetoric and how much is transparent signalling of policy changes. Global Sourcing and Procurement could be left having to execute rapid changes in construction of supply chains to mitigate such huge tariff impacts. The calculation form many companies will be to balance, how much cost can I pass on to my clients/customers ?
