Did you know that hospitals are some of the most energy-intensive buildings on the planet, representing 4.4% of the world’s total carbon emissions? For these mission- and science-driven organizations, going greener is increasingly important to both patients and clinicians. At the 1.2 million square foot Massachusetts General Hospital Ragon Building, currently under construction, creative methods for reducing heat waste and energy—for example, reducing window to wall ratio by two-thirds and placing patient rooms on higher floors to allow access to daylight—result in a hospital designed to cut emissions by more than 90%, be powered by 100% renewable energy, and be fully electric when it’s finished. For culturally rich regions, designing with a sense of place through materiality and craft can result in a building that serves as a beacon. At Oasis Central Sudirman in Jakarta, Indonesia, patterns common to Batik fabrics inspire the design of the exterior shading system, while roof structures reference traditional Javanese vernacular. A series of green outdoor spaces are carved out at strategic locations throughout the building, layered with terraces, open-air courtyards, covered plazas and community pools to offer access to light, air, water and views. The project also enhances the identity of its city through its distinctive form and height. It measures 330 M—the tallest building and first supertall in Jakarta—and serves as an important visual landmark.

Roses are red, architecture is too...these projects are sweet, and so are you 🏛️💖 In honor of Valentine’s Day, we’re posting some of our favorite—or should we say, some of our only—pink and red projects. Whether it's buildings or hearts, we think these hues are always a good structure (see what we did there?) for romance. Due to their complex requirements, flexibility in lab buildings is difficult to achieve. Yet among scientists’ top needs, they rank flexibility as one of the most important. This data, gathered from a survey of 1,059 scientists by NBBJ and The New York Academy of Sciences, shows more than 40% of researchers don’t have the flexibility they need in their buildings today, let alone for tomorrow. What’s more, with the cost to renovate lab buildings approaching $1,200 per square foot, there’s a pressing need to design adaptable research buildings that can accommodate unknown needs. Learn more about the survey results and our ideas for labs that support flexibility here: https://lnkd.in/gu5mmCCJ #nbbjdesign #futurelab #labdesign #appliedresearch

Revamping the White House Tour for the digital age—creating a novel experience for visitors while honoring the building’s history and the democratic process—is an honor of the highest degree. To envision a more deeply engaging visitor experience, the The White House and former First Lady Jill Biden tapped A+E Networks and NBBJ’s experience design studio, NBBJ | ESI Design. The design team harnessed the power of touch, sound, video and movement to tell important stories that illustrate key moments in American history. The design accommodates the public during the day and White House staff, the First Family or heads of state after hours. It also provides greater public access and reflects the White House’s neoclassical architecture with an updated, modern twist. Westmark School? More like Westmark “cool!” So cool, in fact, that the campus for children with language-based learning differences is nominated for ArchDaily’s Building of the Year Award in the Educational Architecture category. The school’s design offers a choice-driven, nature-centric environment that is both inclusive and welcoming. The project aligns the architectural vision to the highly specialized instructional model of Westmark School, with right-sized classrooms and learning environments that provide flexibility, healthy daylight and air quality, and opportunities for movement and outdoor learning. Cast your vote for Westmark through February 12th by visiting: https://lnkd.in/eWBcEDx6

We’re accustomed to technology that encourages us to move when we’re physically sedentary. But what if our office spaces could do the same when we’re in a creative rut? This idea forms the basis of our most recent research partnership with the University of Washington’s Applied Research Consortium. To prompt a mental shift, we designed a dynamic sensory experience in our office with ethereal materials, lighting and color intended to create spatial nudges. We then surveyed NBBJ’ers about their experience to learn how to improve our next iterations. According to survey results, the installation jump-starts creativity, creates visual interest, and prompts physical movement. Ninety percent of respondents say the installation provides a sense of well-being, and 24% commented on the installation’s ability to slow them down both physically and mentally. What do these findings tell us about designing offices? First, a restorative space must be easy to access—ideally, it is adjacent to or part of common circulation paths. Elements that mimic nature and daylight, offer a range of spatial experiences, and prompt a change in movement also stimulate a reset. Finally, the incorporation of tactile and visual sensations creates a sense of fluidity between body and mind. #nbbjdesign #designresearch #flowstate
