NDB approves 4 projects with loans totalling USD 776 million across transport, logistics and clean energy infrastructure sectors. 📍 INDIA: Madhya Pradesh State Highways Improvement Project NDB's USD 490 million loan will upgrade over 885 km of state highways to double-lane roads, significantly improving connectivity between district headquarters, major cities and agricultural areas. This improved transport infrastructure will benefit more than 12 million people. 📍 BRAZIL: Brasilia Capital of Solar Lighting Project NDB’s EUR 94 million loan will be used to retrofit 300,000 public lighting lamps with LED technology and build a 162.5 MW solar photovoltaic plant in the Federal District. These upgrades are projected to cut energy consumption from public lighting by 50% and significantly boost solar power's share in Brazil's energy mix.   📍 INDIA: SAEL 300 MW Renewable Energy Project NDB's USD 63 million loan to SAEL Solar MHP1 Private Limited will facilitate the construction and operation of a 300 MW solar photovoltaic power plant in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh. It is projected to generate over 80 MW of electricity annually and reduce CO2 emissions by more than 0.63 million tonnes. 📍 INDIA: Shriram Finance Sustainable Transport Project NDB’s USD 125 million loan to Shriram Finance Limited (SFL), one of India's largest non-bank finance companies, will enhance SFL's financing for energy-efficient vehicles, focusing on individual drivers, first-time borrowers, and small fleet operators with 4-5 vehicles in transport and logistics. Dilma Rousseff, President of the New Development Bank, met with Uruguay’s President-elect, Yamandú Orsi, in Montevideo. The discussions centered around Uruguay's accession to the New Development Bank, highlighting collaboration in infrastructure development, poverty reduction, and environmental sustainability. Pernambuco, located in northeast Brazil, has the lowest water availability per capita among the country’s 27 states. Over 50% of households face irregular water supply, and less than a third of municipalities have proper sewerage systems. In response, Compesa, the state’s main water supply and sanitation service provider, has embarked on an initiative to cope with frequent water rationing, reduce water losses and expand service coverage. In February 2023, NDB approved a USD 202 million loan to fund the Pernambuco Water and Sanitation Efficiency and Expansion Project, benefiting 14 municipalities with crucial infrastructure improvements. This project will enhance water supply efficiency and expand sanitation services in the Recife Metropolitan Region and beyond, ensuring over 2 million people gain access to clean water and sanitation. This week, we were delighted to host the first in-person Annual Meeting of Heads of Protocol from Multilateral Development Banks (#MDBs) at our HQ in #Vienna. Over two productive days, representatives from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), African Development Bank Group, Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), EBRD, European Investment Bank (EIB), Inter-American Development Bank, International Monetary Fund, Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), New Development Bank (NDB) and The World Bank engaged in discussions on benchmarking, standardizing #protocol activities and addressing shared challenges faced by MDBs. South Africa's rail logistics infrastructure, once robust, has faced significant deterioration. Consequently, traditional rail freight is increasingly being diverted to road transport, incurring higher logistics costs and exposing the economy to volatile cost drivers like fuel prices. To address these challenges, NDB has provided a 5 billion Rand loan to Transnet, South Africa’s leading freight transport and logistics company. This investment aims to modernise the freight rail sector, focusing on infrastructure renewal and equipment upgrades. This initiative is expected to restore freight volumes, enhance operational efficiency, reduce transportation costs, stimulate economic activity and create jobs. By shifting freight back to rail, the programme will also lower carbon emissions.
