"Hong Kong has become expensive, and that’s good for the hotel industry after decades of looking at occupancy as the measure of success. Rates came second." Less than 18 months after Hong Kong reopened, the hotel industry is changing its strategy. Room supply is a hot topic after 4 years dominated by talk about whether demand would ever rebound to 2018 levels. Hong Kong's visitor arrivals are still a long way short of 2018, but - in a move mirroring Singapore - hotel rate management is trending upwards. This excellent article by Travel Weekly Asia examines the reasons why. Next week marks 4 years since Hong Kong prohibited non-residents from entering because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Initially, the ban was slated to last 14 days. It endured for 18 months. The closure of Hong Kong, and its vital travel sector, came off the back of prolonged street protests in 2019 that repelled business and leisure visitors. However, "Rebounding arrivals drove hotel occupancy to 82.5% in 2023 and continue to trend up, with average daily rates climbing." So, what happens next...? And does Hong Kong need to reboot its pipeline? Well worth a read! https://lnkd.in/eggx5bUi?

Following in the footsteps of destinations such as Thailand, Shanghai is piloting a new service with China Telecom offering short-term SIM cards for foreign tourists and business travelers, a move aimed at enhancing connectivity and simplifying digital access for visitors. This is part of China's broader strategy to attract more international visitors by easing travel logistics, demonstrated by the recent introduction of visa-free policies for additional European countries. While this advancement promotes accessibility, travelers should be aware that some international services may still require a VPN. Nonetheless, it does give visitors instant access to essential services like Alipay and WeChat Pay, which are now supporting overseas credit cards, the digital subway pass, as well as local ride-hailing services such as DiDi. With Shanghai leading the way, this will likely be rolled out country-wide in the months to follow. How will these developments impact the experience of international travelers in China, especially in light of the gradual recovery of the tourism sector? 🔍 For the full story and more details, read here: https://lnkd.in/gqyh_ibJ #ChinaTourism #TelecomServices #ChinaVisaPolicy #ResetStrategies 🌏 At re:set strategies, we continue to monitor and analyze these advancements. China is out-front once again in terms of visitor arrivals to Thailand. In 2019, 11 million Chinese visitors touched down in The Land of Smiles. The statistics from January and February 2020 suggested another bumper year. We all know what happened next. Since Thailand fully reopened after the pandemic in April 2022, Malaysia has usurped China as the nation's #1 inbound market in both 2022 and 2023. This year is likely to be different. Thailand received 5.98 million visitors (up 48% year-on-year) from 1 January-25 February. 1.1 million of those arrived from China. Malaysia placed 2nd (760,000) and Russia 3rd (397,000). South Korea and India completed the top 5. Thailand is targeting 8.2 million Chinese visitors in 2024 - and it has made a strong start to the year... Is that target achievable?
