  • Container volume at Incheon port surpasses 3.5m TEU in 2024 January 10, 2025 THE Incheon Port Authority (IPA) announced on December 30, 2024, that the container throughput at Incheon Port had surpassed the annual target of 3.5 million TEU as of December 26. According to the IPA, there were concerns about meeting the target as the throughput performance from September to November showed a slowdown compared to the same period last year. However, on December 22, Incheon Port exceeded its previous record of 3.46 million TEU set last year, continuing its upward trend and surpassing 3.5 million TEU. Achieving the 3.5 million TEU target for container throughput last year faced several challenges, according to BusinessKorea. Firstly, due to merchant ships bypassing the Red Sea to avoid the Houthi rebels in Yemen, maritime freight rates surged from May to early July, resulting in a decrease in used car exports to the Mediterranean region from Incheon Port. Additionally, domestic private consumption stagnation led to a decline in import cargo from September onwards. Despite these challenging domestic and international conditions, the container throughput from Incheon Port's major trading partners, including China, Vietnam, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, showed robust growth. As a result, Incheon Port is expected to record an increase of approximately 90 thousand TEU compared to last year.

  • Maersk newbuildings to be equipped with Smart Air Compressors January 10, 2025 CHINA's Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group has awarded a contract to Oslo-headquartered TMC Compressors to deliver its Smart Air compressors to six mid-sized dual-fuel methanol container ships that it is building for Maersk. Under the contract, TMC Compressors (TMC) will provide a complete marine compressed air system based on its Smart Air compressors, which it says offer up to 40 per cent energy saving compared to conventional compressors. The system will consist of control and service air compressors, reports New York's MarineLink. The Smart Air compressors are based on a frequency-controlled technology that offers precise control of the compressor speed. The speed of the electrical motor will adjust itself according to what is required to produce the exact air volume necessary to meet the actual compressed air consumption at all times. In turn, lower air consumption requires less speed on the compressor, and this directly results in less power consumption. Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group will deliver the six 9,000 TEU vessels in 2026 and 2027.

  • MSC wrapped up 2024 with year-end container ship demolition deal January 10, 2025 GENEVA, Switzerland-headquartered Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) is finishing off the year by purging yet another of its older feeder container ships from its fleet, reports Norway's TradeWinds. The 923-TEU MSC Esha F (built 1993) is the 19th containership MSC has sold this year for recycling, including owned vessels and others chartered from Niki Shipping. According to broking reports, the vessel was sold to an MSC-approved shipbreaking yard at Alang in India for enhanced green recycling at US$492 per light displacement tonnage (LDT), or $2.4 million.

  • Continuing 'unusually strong' streak in US box imports January 10, 2025 US container ports recorded their fourteenth consecutive month of growth in November, with inbound volumes surging 13.1 per cent year on year across the nation's ten largest ports, according to the latest report from John McCown. The November increase, which exceeded October's 9.7 per cent gain, represents one of the strongest growth periods in container shipping history outside of the pandemic era. Total inbound volume reached 2,033,620 TEU, though still remaining 11.1 per cent below the record set in May 2022. "Using the trailing twelve-month growth number as a metric, the 14.7 per cent in the latest yearly period is, after excluding ten months during the pandemic, near or at the top of any one-year growth period ever," stated McCown. "We are unquestionably seeing unusually strong and consistent volume growth." The total value of containerized goods moving through all US ports, including those outside the top 10, reached US$185.3 billion in November, according to Ventura, California's gCaptain. McCown's report highlights the continuing coastal shift due to ongoing labour concerns at East and Gulf Coast ports, with the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) and US Maritime Alliance (USMX) locked in a heated dispute over port automation. McCown notes that West Coast ports have outperformed their East/Gulf Coast counterparts in fourteen of the past sixteen months. This westward shift intensified after a three-day ILA strike in October that ended with a contract extension until January 15, 2025. The coastal divergence is stark, with West Coast ports operating 10.1 per cent above their 52-month average, while East/Gulf Coast facilities dropped 3.4 per cent below their average. November data showed a 14.2 percentage point coastal gap, with West Coast ports posting a 20.2 per cent increase compared to just 6.0 per cent for East/Gulf Coast facilities. Despite concerns about potential inventory buildup and supply chain disruptions, McCown reports that official census data shows minimal impact from volume being pulled forward, though coastal shifting remains significant.

  • Box lines reduce Asia-Europe rates ahead of alliance restructure January 10, 2025 LINER operators are discounting Asia-Europe freight rates for the first two weeks of January, as they fight for market share ahead of the reshuffling of container shipping alliances in February. On December 27, 2024, the Shanghai-North Europe rate gained just 0.5 per cent from the previous week to close at US$2,962/TEU, after declining for the previous three weeks. Consultancy Linerlytica observed that spot rates for the first two weeks of 2025 remain very volatile with initial hikes followed by subsequent rate cuts as carriers continue to jostle for market share ahead of the alliance reshuffle in February, reports Greece's Container News. Market leader MSC will become a solo operator in February, after its 2M partner Maersk Line leaves to start Gemini Cooperation with Hapag-Lloyd. The latter is jettisoning THE Alliance, which will be renamed Premier Alliance in February. However, MSC will be cooperating with Premier Alliance in the Asia-Europe trades. On December 30, 2024, the EC2412 (December 2024) contract for the Asia-Europe freight futures was settled at 3,445 points, which was 4.4 per cent higher than a week before. Despite the stronger finish that month, futures for 2025 traded lower over the past week, with the main contract for EC2502 (February 2025) falling 13 per cent week on week on lower daily volumes. Linerlytica commented: "Traders shrugged off the SCFI North Europe rebound on December 27, as attention shifts to the lacklustre rate hikes in January which could foreshadow a steeper rate decline in February post-Chinese New Year. Carriers are still offering discounts for the first 2 weeks of January despite healthy capacity utilization as they gear up for the alliance reshuffle that will take place in February. Maersk has already reduced its online quotation for January shipments to US$4,800 per FEU, triggering rivals to respond accordingly. This has resulted in reduced settlement prices for Asia-Europe freight futures.

  • Air cargo links between central China's Henan and Nordic region January 09, 2025 AN international cargo route has been officially launched between Zhengzhou, the capital of central China's Henan Province, and Billund, Denmark, marking the first direct air cargo route between the cities. A B767 freighter arrived at Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport from Billund last Friday, and after loading cargo, it returned to Billund, signifying the official launch of the route, reports Xinhua. The route is operated by Maersk Air Cargo from Denmark, primarily transporting cross-border e-commerce goods and electronic products, with six flights scheduled per week. The opening of this route marks the official entry of Maersk Air into Zhengzhou's airport, expanding the air corridor from Zhengzhou to Europe into the Nordic region, according to the China Henan Aviation Group. Data shows that in 2024, Zhengzhou airport's cargo and mail throughput exceeded 800,000 tonnes, setting a historic record for annual cargo and mail volume since the airport's opening in 1997.

  • Box shipping overcapacity crisis saved by Red Sea diversions January 09, 2025 THE container shipping industry dodged a potential overcapacity crisis in 2024, thanks to the Red Sea diversions crisis that forced vessels to take longer routes around Africa's Cape of Good Hope, writes Ventura, California's gCaptain. The global container fleet expanded significantly in 2024, growing by 10.6 per cent and adding nearly 3 million TEU of capacity, according Alphaliner. However, rather than flooding the market with excess capacity as many feared, these additional vessels were largely absorbed by the Asia-Europe trade route, where ships were forced to divert around the Cape of Good Hope to avoid dangerous Red Sea passages. In its weekly email, Alphaliner highlighted the substantial impact of these diversions, with the Asia-Europe trade absorbing 1.76 million TEU, representing 59 per cent of the total fleet growth. The extended voyage times around the Cape effectively soaked up what could have been surplus capacity, leading to remarkably low idle tonnage rates. By year's end, just 0.6 per cent of the global container fleet remained commercially inactive. "The year 2024 will be remembered in liner shipping circles as the (first) year of the Red Sea crisis, just as 2021 and 2022 are now commonly referred to as the lucrative Covid-19 years," Alphaliner noted. While fleet capacity on the Asia-Europe route grew by 31 per cent over the year, the actual weekly capacity offered on the route increased by just 8.8 per cent between December 2023 and December 2024, demonstrating how the longer Cape routes consumed the additional capacity.

  • Air France KLM Cargo sets new online booking record January 08, 2025 AIR France KLM Martinair Cargo's (AFKLMP) investments in its digital services continued to pay off last year as the Franco-Dutch airline group reported a new monthly record for online booking penetration. AFKLMP reported that in November 85 per cent of all bookings were made online using its myCargo digital platform, which was developed in-house and launched eight years ago. The cargo business said that the "recent surge" in online bookings reflected "growing customer confidence and satisfaction". The company has recently invested in dynamic pricing to offer optimal pricing in real time and is in the process of rolling out the Salesforce customer relationship management platform (CRM). The CRM system is currently being rolled out across 65 offices worldwide. GertJan Roelands, senior vice president commercial at Air France KLM Martinair Cargo, said: "We have high hopes for 2025, when we will continue to take bold steps in our commercial transformation by offering unique, next-level service propositions to meet the increasing demands and needs of our customers." AFKLMP has always been at the forefront of digitalization in air cargo: it was one of the first to offer a quote and book option in 2017 and one of the first to place its capacity on a third-party booking portal back in 2019.

  • Shanghai port kicks off 2025 with methanol bunkering operation January 08, 2025 SHANGHAI's Yangshan port started the new year with the vessel Haigang Zhiyuan successfully completing a 3,000-tonne methanol bunkering operation for the Anne Maersk on January 1. It marked the first such operation of 2025 and signalled the start of regular methanol bunkering at the port, reports India's Maritime Gateway. Methanol, with its low emissions, is becoming a key alternative marine fuel. The Haigang Zhiyuan, the first methanol bunkering vessel at Shanghai Port, features 12 cargo tanks with a total capacity of 16,000 cubic metres. It enables ship-to-ship bunkering while supporting container operations, boosting efficiency and sustainability. The Yangshan Port MSA put in place extensive safety protocols and emergency procedures to guarantee safe operations. They worked closely with shipping companies, port operators, and pilot stations, keeping a careful eye on the entire process. There will be two more methanol operations in January after this successful bunkering.

  • CMA CGM plans resumption of services to Ukraine's Odesa January 07, 2025 FRENCH shipping giant CMA CGM has announced plans to resume services to Ukraine's Odesa as Kyiv gradually rebuilds its maritime trade routes, according to Singapore's Splash 247. CMA CGM will launch the new Odessa Express (ODX) in late January offering a direct loop connecting Piraeus (Greece) and Istanbul (Turkey) with Odesa (Ukraine). This move will see CMA CGM becoming the second major carrier to restart Ukrainian operations with its own vessels, following MSC's earlier Black Sea feeder service between Constanta (Romania) and Chornomorsk. CMA CGM's new route will be the first direct maritime connection between Greece and Ukraine after Russia imposed its blockade at the Black Sea. The ODX service plans to deploy two vessels: the 1,118 TEU Lila Canada and the 1,550 TEU TJ Orhan. The TJ Orhan is scheduled to depart Piraeus on January 24, with its first call at Odesa expected on January 28. Regular container services to Ukrainian ports resumed in April when Iteris Feeders, a Ukrainian transport and logistics firm, launched a route linking Constanta and Chornomorsk.
