Last week, Zach Bryan brought out John Mayer as a special guest at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, closing the show with a joint performance of his song “Revival.” Over the weekend, Mayer took to his Sirius XM radio show, Life with John Mayer, to gush over Bryan’s live show, calling it “one of the most incredible things I’ve seen in years.”
Recounting the experience, Mayer explained that he saw that Bryan’s “The Quittin Time Tour” (grab tickets here) was going to make a stop in Los Angeles, and reached out to see if he could attend “just to see the show.” Bryan replied, asking if Mayer would like to play a few songs with the band.
From there, Mayer was awestruck by how Bryan and his band operated. “This guy and his band have the greatest camaraderie offstage and, therefore, onstage — the crowd goes nuts,” he said.
“I’ve never seen a band change the space around them in an arena,” he continued. “An arena is sorta like, ‘Here, you’re using our room; do your thing in our room.’ Zach Bryan and his band are like, ‘We’re gonna take your room and we’re gonna have a hoedown in it, thank you very much.’ They have string lights as if it were a bar, but yet it’s still an arena show.”
To that end, Mayer found inspiration in the performance. “He’s cracked some code that I have been waiting for someone to crack,” he said. “He’s tapped into a thing with people that should give everyone hope. Sometimes you start feeling like, ‘Oh, it’s going to be a long time before a lot of people like one thing again,’ [but] a lot of people like Zach Bryan shows. Myself included. It was unbelievable.”
