Welcome to a Consequence Chat, a feature that finds Consequence staff members debating the biggest stories in pop culture. Today, we look back at the legacy of Lost, as the groundbreaking series returns to Netflix today. The transcript below has been edited for clarity and length.

Mary Siroky (Associate Editor): Well, folks, as three known fans of Lost, we couldn’t be more excited that the show is moving to Netflix, which will hopefully open up a whole new audience to the magic of the island, years of great acting, and some pretty incredible writing. Lost changed the game in so many ways — and I’m just as excited to do a re-watch as I am to see some first-time reactions on the timeline. How do you both think the show holds up for re-watch value? Have either of you ever done a full re-watch?

Paolo Ragusa (Associate Editor): Having been ages 9 to 15 during the show’s original run, I’ve rewatched the show twice — once in 2017 and once during the pandemic. I thought the show was interesting as a kid when my parents would watch, but of course, a lot of the heavier themes went right over my head.

Rewatching it the first time completely changed my relationship to the show and why it was significant. I think being able to watch it all in succession, without having to wait for a new episode each week, was actually a helpful way to understand the overall scope of the story — I know that’s not how the show was intended to be seen, but it’s a quicker way to get into the meat and potatoes of what the showrunners were after.

Mary: I can relate — my sister and I started watching when Hulu first appeared on the scene. (There weren’t even ads yet!) It allowed us to catch up on the first few seasons, which we were also too young to watch when it first aired. But we caught up by the time Season 5 hit the air and watched the last season in real time. I’ve admittedly lost count of how many times I’ve rewatched the show in full, but it’s been a few years. How about you, Liz?

Liz Shannon Miller (Senior Entertainment Editor): You know, it’s funny — I’ve definitely rewatched large portions of the show (can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen “The Constant,” for obvious reasons) but I honestly don’t think I’ve ever done a beginning-to-end re-binge.
