Around this time last year, we celebrated fantastic albums from emerging artists and mid-career independents, while noting a void where the superstars usually go. As it turned out, pretty much all of them were in the studio, setting their sights on Spring of 2024. Some of these releases were a bit, uh, tortured, even downright bad — but others became grand, legacy-expanding experiments.

Beyoncé continued her trilogy exploring Blackness in American music, offering a historically-rich take on country. Country star Kacey Musgraves returned alongside Saturn with a fresh vision for cosmic pop. And as Katie Crutchfield proved with her fantastic new Waxahatchee album, Tigers Bloodit isn’t just the biggest names bringing fresh sounds to country spaces.

Even for those who don’t like a little yee with their haw, 2024 has been a great year in music. Metal veterans High on Fire released one of their strongest albums to date, The Smile are quietly building a discography that can stand up to Radiohead’s, and Vince Staples demonstrated yet again that no one has his ear for beats.
