Welcome to another episode of Mixtapes!, our video interview series where an artists reveals their musical tastes by creating a completely off-the-cuff playlist. This time, Dawes soundtrack body swaps, unexpected hair cuts, and running out of TP.

What do Dawes, body swap movies, and Miramar Beach, Florida have in common? Not a gosh darned thing — until we asked Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith what would soundtrack their Freaky Friday moment while at Topeka’s Moon Crush Pink Moon festival.

The brothers/bandmates joined us ahead of their set at the event to play a round of Mixtapes! With the beautiful Gulf Coast behind them, they reached into our plastic sand bucket of prompts and built a spontaneous playlist for the first day of shorts weather, strange encounters in the woods, and even doing battle with Oasis’ Gallagher brothers.

We also wanted to know what song from Middle Brother (Taylor’s short-lived supergroup with Delta Spirit’s Matthew Logan Vasquez and Deer Tick’s John McCauley) they would want to hear requested at a live show. Might that prompt have something to do with the fact that Dawes are just days away from their run of summer tour dates? Maybe. Is the fact that they also named a track from Mike Viola, with whom they’re about to play a handful of shows, completely coincidental? Yes. Yes it is. (Either way, get tickets to those gigs via StubHub, where orders are 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s FanProtect program.)

See what situations led to Dawes naming songs by The Kinks, Thin Lizzy, Bee Gees, John Prine, and more by watching the video interview above (or via YouTube).
