Fredericksburg, Virginia, June 1, 2022 - Central Rappahannock Regional Library has launched their summer reading program for all ages - Off the Beaten Path. Points can also be used to purchase tickets for grand prize drawings for prizes including an iPad Mini, a Samsung Tablet, eGift cards, and themed book bags.

Sign up and participate through the library's website at librarypoint.org/summer or with the Beanstack Tracker Mobile app.

Special summer events for youth include:

  • Grow a Reader in-person Summer Reading kickoff specials
  • Customers can pick up themed Grab and Go bags from the 1st-8th of each month and an activity packet from the 9th-end of each month.
  • Paws for Reading with the Blue Gray therapy dogs is restarting in June in branches, while also continuing to hold virtual sessions.
  • Talewise presents in-person, nautical-themed adventure combined with hands-on science experiments. Free tickets required.
  • In-person Fabulous Fridays are aligned with monthly adventurous themes, including the great outdoors, underwater fun, and space exploration.

A key goal of summer reading programs is to prevent the learning loss that can happen with “Summer Slide.” Children who don’t read or participate in educational or enriching activities over the summer can fall behind. A 2011 study performed by RAND Corporation noted that, in general, elementary students’ performance falls back by about a month during the summer, and the decline is far worse for students from low-income families. More disturbing, this “slide” is cumulative, contributing substantially to a long-term achievement gap. This gap, researchers concluded, might not be successfully closed with efforts made during the school year alone.

In 2021, 4,273 participants signed up for CRRL’s summer reading program. Participating adults logged 6,408 books. Children and teens logged 2.1 million minutes reading.
