At Bean Voyage, we have been working with incredible smallholder women coffee farmers across regions of Mexico, so it felt right to host the 2024 Women Powered Coffee Summit in one of Mexico's Pueblos Mágicos, Cordoba. Over 200 guests flew in from around the world, including 40 producers from our producer network in Costa Rica, 10 producers in Colombia, and more, to join us for four days in October 2024 to celebrate women in coffee! The days were filled with inspirational talks, engaging workshops, and memorable cultural experiences, converging the beauty of the backdrop in Ex-Hacienda Toxpan with the buzz of the coffee world. Read our blog to learn more about what exactly happened over the 4 magical days!

We’re thrilled to announce that this year’s Resilient Communities Initiative (RCI) bootcamp in Costa Rica was our largest in-person gathering of smallholder women coffee farmers to date! RCI, an integral part of Bean Voyage’s model, provides smallholder women farmers with essential training, seed funding, and peer mentorship to empower their growth and resilience. A total of 135 women from various coffee producing regions of Costa Rica participated in a dynamic 3-day bootcamp, where each session showcased the incredible potential that emerges when these women are equipped with the right tools and resources. Here are some of the highlights: [1] Gender Workshop: An in-depth exploration of gender roles and their effects on rural communities. [2] Farm Diversification: Hands-on workshops, including soap making and building solar dryers, to introduce new income streams. [3] Biointensive Gardens: Practical training on sustainable farming techniques to ensure long-term profitability.  [4] Panel Discussion: Past seed fund recipients shared inspiring stories about the real-world impact of their projects.  [5] Visioning Exercise: Participants developed actionable farm diversification plans tailored to their individual goals. As a next step, participants will submit income diversification action plans, which will be reviewed by an independent grant review committee. Seed funds, or capital semilla, will be distributed later this year. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our thought partners—MAGMA Communication, Artists For Soup, Finca La Hilda, and the University of Costa Rica—for their invaluable collaboration in making this event a success. A special note of gratitude to The Starbucks Foundation for their unwavering trust and support. Thanks to their backing, this program has evolved from a small pilot into a transformative resource for women farmers across Costa Rica.

We’re pleased to announce a new partnership with the Coffee Quality Institute (CQI) as a Key Partner for this year’s Women-Powered Coffee Summit. This collaboration is an important step in our goal to create a just and inclusive coffee industry. CQI is sponsoring 15 smallholder women coffee farmers to attend the Summit in Veracruz, Mexico. This Summit, now in its third year, offers a special opportunity for women across the coffee industry to connect, share their experiences, and build valuable relationships. As part of this partnership, CQI has secured 10 spots for women from the International Women in Coffee Alliance Mexico’s network and 5 spots for women from the Cafecol community. This aligns with CQI’s mission to strengthen connections with origin-based organizations and expand training opportunities. On Day 1, CQI will host a 90-minute workshop, further solidifying their role as a key partner in this initiative.
