🌊📡 El Mediterráneo en 2024: récords de temperatura y #OlasdeCalor marinas #SOCIB ha monitorizado cambios sin precedentes en el Mediterráneo durante 2024. Gracias a sus herramientas digitales, se ha registrado un aumento récord en la temperatura media anual del mar, superando en +1,55 ºC la media histórica desde 1982. 🔸 2024 fue el año más cálido en la cuenca oriental (22,3 ºC) y el tercero en la occidental (20,0 ºC). 🔸 El invierno de 2024 marcó temperaturas nunca vistas: 15,6 ºC en la cuenca occidental y 17,7 ºC en la oriental. 🔸 Se registraron 205 días de olas de calor en la cuenca occidental y 288 días en la oriental. El calentamiento sigue en 2025 (CC Copernicus Marine Service): enero ha sido el más cálido a nivel global (13,23 °C, +0,79 °C vs. 1991-2020). 📡🔬 #SOCIB ha colaborado con el Laboratorio Subterráneo De Canfranc en la validación de cubiertas protectoras clave para el futuro telescopio de #Neutrinos #HyperKamiokande, un proyecto internacional con participación española. Esta cooperación entre Infraestructuras Científicas y Técnicas Singulares (#ICTS) ha sido posible gracias a las prestaciones del Buque Oceanográfico B/O SOCIB y al equipo técnico de la ICTS SOCIB, permitiendo evaluar sensores de luz en condiciones extremas. Para ello, se han sometido a ondas de presión de 50 bares en inmersiones de 80 m de profundidad en el Mediterráneo. Esta colaboración ha permitido su validación, combinando la experiencia del LSC en física de partículas con la capacidad de SOCIB para realizar pruebas en entornos oceánicos reales. 🛥️ During the AQUARIUS General Assembly in Helsinki last week we had the chance to visit RV Aranda! 🏞️ Managed by Finnish Environment Institute (Syke) - Suomen ympäristökeskus (Syke), RV Aranda is designed for marine research, biological, physical, hydrographic, geophysical and geotechnical surveys and it has sailed for these purposes in several seas, visiting both the Arctic and Antarctic regions. 🎛️ On board the vessel, we had the opportunity to speak with scientists and crew who told us stories of their expeditions in the Baltic and showed us the equipment they use to take water samples from 3km deep where the pressure is about 300 times higher than at sea level. 📌 We also saw one of the gliders operated by The Finnish Meteorological Institute - Ilmatieteen laitos. These gliders traverse pre-programmed routes, collecting data on temperature, salinity, oxygen levels, chlorophyll concentration, turbidity, and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM). ➡️ Both these research infrastructures play crucial roles in understanding the Baltic Sea ecosystem. Thank you to the SOCIB and IMEDEA - Institut Mediterrani d'estudis Avançats centres in Mallorca for the hospitality and productive discussions on collaborative marine research. The Regional Minister of Education, Antoni Vera, reaffirmed the support of the Balearic government for international cooperation initiatives in the marine field. Also in attendance were the director of SOCIB, Joaquín Tintoré; the director of IMEDEA (UIB-CSIC), Gotzon Basterretxea; the rector of the Universitat de les Illes Balears, Jaume Carot; the vice-rector of Science Policy and Research, Víctor Homar; and Amala Mahadevan from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. We discussed the results obtained in the successful international project ‘Coherent Lagrangian paths from the ocean surface to the deep ocean (CALYPSO)’, in which SOCIB and IMEDEA worked together with US institutions as well as new opportunities for collaboration. The Office of Naval Research and the Office of Naval Research Global (ONR Global) appreciate your dedication to making significant advances in marine research and celebrate the Balearics’ position as an international leader in this field.
