The world is rushing to fulfil its goal of tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030. As a result, the production of critical minerals required for renewable energy technologies will have to be ramped up. While lithium, cobalt and nickel are crucial, many other minerals and metals are used to manufacture clean energy technologies including wind turbines, solar panels and grids that connect them to users. But if not properly managed and regulated, mining can come with huge environmental and human costs.

While steering away from fossil fuels, stakeholders must ensure that the minerals crucial for the transition are extracted sustainably. Technological innovation including AI can improve working conditions and safety. Mining companies can move from using fossil fuels to renewables in their own operations. Local communities must be safeguarded and benefit from the profits that the sector is generating. Regulators should encourage the recycling of minerals and metals. Finally, new technologies can enable diversification away from the rarest minerals to make the transition less dependent on particular suppliers.

This in-person panel discussion, hosted by the Financial Times in partnership with Vedanta on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos, will explore ways in which the minerals and metals needed for the energy transition can be sourced more sustainably.
