About us

PHAETHON is a Teaming for Excellence Horizon Europe project that will lead to the establishment of the PHAETHON Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Research and Innovation (R&I) in the field of Intelligent, Efficient and Sustainable Energy Solutions, signalling in parallel the evolution and upgrade of the FOSS Research Centre for Sustainable Energy of the University of Cyprus. The PHAETHON Project was submitted and awarded funding under the prestigious Horizon Europe “Teaming for Excellence” Call for Proposals, securing funding of €15 million from the EU, as well as an equal amount from national sources (Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Republic of Cyprus), with significant funding also coming in from the private and public sectors. It is worth noting the proposal obtained the highest ranking in the evaluation (with a top score of 14.5/15), out of 110 proposals that were submitted at the European level. Along with UCY, the other partners in the consortium are the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation “Cyprus Seeds”, the Technical University of Denmark, and the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. The project’s main outcome is to upgrade the highly successful FOSS Research Centre to an autonomous, self-sustaining Centre of Excellence in the energy field. It also serves as an academic and professional conduit between three countries (Cyprus, Denmark, and the Netherlands), jointly tackling the challenges and working towards facilitating the much-needed green transition. The Project has received funding by the European Union (Grant agreement ID: 101059898). The Project has received funding from the Government of the Republic of Cyprus through the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, and the University of Cyprus.
