Balancing Sustainability, Efficiency, and Innovation in Plastics Processing. Injection molding is a widely used technique that involves injecting molten raw material into a mold. Among the various types, gas-assisted, micro-injection, and insert molding are the most prevalent. Other popular methods include extrusion and blow molding, with extrusion being recognized for its sustainability. This is due to its efficient use of materials, lower waste production, and potential for energy optimization. However, all these processes emit significant amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and operate at high temperatures, typically ranging from 200 to 350°C. The energy required to maintain these temperatures leads to increased greenhouse gas emissions. As awareness of sustainability grows, there is a noticeable shift in plastics processing technologies towards minimizing environmental impact, controlling emissions, and adopting more energy-efficient practices and sustainable materials. Switching from metal to a PA/PPA blend can offer significant savings in both weight and cost. BASF has introduced a range of polyamide (PA) and polyphthalamide (PPA) blends, named Ultramid T7000, that provide more consistent mechanical properties compared to PA 66, making them ideal for advanced metal replacement in structural components. The inclusion of PPA reduces water absorption, ensuring dimensional stability. Additionally, Ultramid T7000 can be easily injection-molded like PA 66, resulting in parts with a sleek and glossy finish. This exceptional combination of features makes the PA/PPA blend an excellent choice for metal replacement in structural applications exposed to moisture, such as automotive mirrors, air brake parts, and valves, as well as for furniture assemblies. Beyond its mechanical advantages, Ultramid T7000 can be fine-tuned with BASF’s Ultrasim simulation tool to enhance noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) performance. This leads to a more durable assembly with fewer parts, eliminating corrosion and improving longevity.
