🚀 Exciting insights from the 2024 Atomico State of European Tech report that was published today! 📈 European tech funding has grown 10x in the past decade, from $43bn to $426bn. The US saw a 2.8x increase in the same period. 🦄 Europe now boasts 358 more unicorns than in 2015, a 500% increase! 💰 Pension funds have doubled their VC investments since 2015, but there's still huge potential for growth. 💰 VCs are sitting on a record $104bn in dry powder in 2023, a threefold increase from $34bn in 2015. 🇪🇪 Estonia leads the world in VC funding to GDP ratio at 1.17%, outpacing even the US and UK. 🚀 The number of early-stage startups in Europe has quadrupled from 8,000 in 2015 to over 35,000 in 2024. 🔬 57% of LPs are conducting due diligence on deeptech funds, compared to 42% on climate tech funds. 🚀 How do states become cheerleaders and enablers of the startup ecosystem? This was the theme of our roundtable, "Startup Europe: Driving Economic Growth Through Tech Innovation," which we organized together with CzechInvest 🇨🇿 and Rockaway Capital at Zenwork We were delighted to host distinguished speakers: Arthur Jordão from ESNA - Europe Startup Nations Alliance 🇪🇺, Clark Parsons from European Startup Network , Tomek Snazyk from Startup Poland 🇵🇱, Myrthe Hooijman from Techleap 🇳🇱, Markus Raunig from AustrianStartups 🇦🇹, and Tomas Karakolev of McKinsey & Company, Karel Obluk from Czech Business Angel Association and Or Haviv of Arieli Capital along with 40+ participants from the Czech startup ecosystem and government! 🌟 After yesterday’s roundtable, it is clear that: 1️⃣ Enabling competitive ESOPs is a true driver for attracting global talent. 2️⃣ Tax reliefs should take precedence over subsidies. 3️⃣ A motivational talent attraction policy is essential—like in the Netherlands 🇳🇱, where foreign employees benefit from a 5-year, 30% tax relief on their salary. 4️⃣ Simplifying administration post-company founding is vital—Austrian Flexco 🇦🇹 does not require notary deeds to transfer ownership and allows for 25% to be distributed among employees. 5️⃣ Institutional investments (e.g., pension funds) in VC funds should be enabled—over 70% of investors in US 🇺🇸 VCs are institutional! 6️⃣ It's crucial to urge politicians to actively lobby the business community to make a footprint in Czechia 🇨🇿. We shared hands-on experiences from all three worlds—founders, investors, and state administration.
