MASS MOVEMENTS FOR RESTORATION? How can we get the hundred of millions living in the world's drylands to believe that a better future is possible - and in their hands? Can we harness their desires - for secure lives, rising prosperity, a bright future for their children, and resilience against shocks - to make restoration possible? That's what we'll discuss tomorrow here in Riyadh. Joseph is all about behaviour change. Volli has mobilised communities across the Sahel. Martina is shifting global food systems. Paul and Leigh have mobilised hundreds of organisations around better soils. And Baba helps pastoralists become better grazing managers.  Together, we'll see how we can shift the behaviour of people, communities, corporations and even states. Portugal's Unique Agroforestry Approach 🇵🇹🌳 Portugal's CAP Strategic Plan (2023-2028) focuses only on silvopastoral agroforestry: indeed it claims that “arable land cannot form agroforestry systems”.  This is a surprising and unique approach amongst EU Member States. 🗝️ Key Points: - Limited definition: Portugal's definition focuses on permanent pastures and excludes arable areas and areas of permanent crops if the latter are managed for commercial fruit or cork production. - Data challenges: indicators for tree-planting (R.17) and plantating maintenance  (O.16) do not separate afforestation from agroforestation - so target areas and annual planting rates are uncertain. - Policy opportunities: the CAP Plan includes four agri-environmental measures and two investment measures specifically focused on agroforestry - this is one of the best commitments to planting and management of agroforestry in Europe. - Carbon potential: Portugal's extensive agroforestry systems, especially cork oak and holm oak, contribute significantly to carbon sequestration, and regeneration efforts may benefit from measurement rules being developed in the EU Carbon Removals Certification Framework. 📚 Learn more in the factsheet produced for the ResAlliance project empowering foresters and farmers with resilience tools for the Mediterranean: https://lnkd.in/d948D69U 👉 Join LandLabs: discover country-specific tools and resources for landscape resilience: https://lnkd.in/dxfRCSry 📷 Author: João Palma | © CC-BY | Black merino sheep under scattered holm oak in Southern Portugal. #agroforestry #Portugal #CAP #climatechange #sustainability #agriculture #EU

The University of Newcastle, the University of Reading, Northumbria University and Aberystwyth University are collaborating in a project aiming to understand farmers' views and attitudes towards agro-forestry schemes. An overview of the project can be found here. You are invited to take part in this survey and share your views about agro-forestry. The results of this research will be used to inform future agroforestry policies through presentations, policy briefs and publications in scientific journals. The survey should take approximately 25 minutes to complete. How does the EUDR impact European agroforesters? Today, the 🇪🇺 European Parliament confirmed the extension of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) for one year, with further discussions to take place in Committee. The EUDR covers cattle, wood, cocoa, soy, palm oil, coffee, rubber, and some of their derived products, such as leather, chocolate, tyres, or furniture. It mandates operators and traders, including those dealing with European products, to produce due diligence certificates and grid references proving that their products do not come from land deforested after December 2020. 📝 🌳 The EUDR definition of “forest” excludes agricultural land and agroforestry. However, many authorities, including EURAF, feel that the current guidelines, and the EU-JRC map, give too much priority to data from remote sensing, and insufficient weight to information from land-use registers, forest inventories, and annual databases on land-use change (including deforestation) produced by Member States in reporting to the UNFCCC The draft EU Forest Monitoring Regulation (FMR) uses the same definition of “forest” as in the EUDR, rather than the national definitions employed by Member States for Greenhouse Gas reporting. The FMR definition should be modified to ensure consistency with UNFCCC reporting and to accurately exclude areas of agricultural land and agroforestry.
