In customer discovery interviews, having a prepared agenda clarifying intentions and outcomes of the meeting is vital as well as the content in the questioning of a customer. Also important is making sure the customer is comfortable in giving as honest feedback as possible.

Some organizations take this a step further by creating digital systems or feedback platforms they can employ with customers during these conversations. By providing programmatic way to foster additional ideas, via email, discussion groups, or online forms gives customers confidence this is not a one-time activity but the beginning of a deeper relationship.

Start by organizing the qualitative data from interviews, notes, and recordings. Categorize it using tools like spreadsheets or, labeling with keywords. Validate findings by identifying patterns, differences, or surprises per customer category. If customers only have high-burden pathways for feedback (for example, through sales account leaders that may introduce more expectations with a call or conversation), they will think twice and likely withold the feedback.
