We are very proud about our formerly trainee Noah Schmidt for his award as “Star of Education“. The Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) in the state of Brandenburg honoured him as one the most successful graduate of their initial training in commercial and industrial professions. He was trained at the GFZ in our working group “Underground Seismics“ within the Section 4.2 “Geomechanics and Scientific Drilling” as an “Electronics Technician for Devices and Systems”. The 3D underground seismic network is located at the German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam and consists of the 3D underground seismic research group, industry representatives and mining universities. For more than 20 years, the research group has been working on the development of the measurement methodology and the appropriate measurement instruments, which will be further developed within and with the help of the network over the next five years. With underground seismics, three-dimensional images of the surroundings of underground structures are created in order to be able to derive statements on the position and spatial orientation of geotechnically relevant structures such as faults.

3D-US Lab at the International Mining Summit 2024 in Tashkent On October 10th the International Mining Summit took place at the Agency for Innovative Development under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovations of the Republic of Uzbekistan organized by the Business Summits Group. We had the opportunity to meet with the mining industry of Central Asia and to discuss their demand of underground exploration. We would like to thank all the participants for sharing their ideas and insights to the mining industry and the technologies.

The 3D-US Lab is conducting a seismic survey at the underground lab Tournemire (operated by IRSN, Institut de Radioprotection et de Sûreté Nucléaire) in cooperation with other sections of the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam. Hydraulic stimulations with injections of gas and water aim to generate cracks in intact rocks or to reactivate existing cracks in fissured rocks. The hydraulic stimulation takes place in a fault zone in clayey shale. The success of the hydraulic stimulation is shown by changes of the hydraulic permeability. Acoustic signals generated while opening of cracks were registrated at nearby boreholes. The hydraulic stimulations with injections are monitored with acoustic seismic monitoring, fiber-optic measurements and an active seismic survey from the 3D-US Lab.
