🔔🔔 The last online #3R colloquium of the year 2024 is in a week 🔔🔔 After a year of online talks spanning multiple aspects of the #3Rs - #replace #reduce #refine - we are closing the colloquial calendar of 2024 with Svante Winberg's, University of Uppsala, "Ethical and Effective Use of Fish in Experimental Research". His research focuses on the neuroendocrine mechanisms of stress coping in bony fish, in particular how different fish species develop genetic and environmental stress coping strategies. He places particular emphasis on the role of the serotonergic system in these processes. The French Conference on the #3Rs - #JournéesFrançaisDes3R - wrapped up with awards celebrating outstanding contributions to #Replace, #Reduce, and #Refine principles. Highlights included the development of digital twins for fetal drug exposure studies and the L3Rn platform revolutionizing physiology education. Day 2 of the #JournéesFrançaisDes3R began with an exciting session on #replacement of animal models, where projects like bio-printed breast tissue and #alternatives for pediatric cancer studies were featured. Day 1 of #JournéesFrançaisDes3R concluded with a thought-provoking keynote on systemic changes in research involving animals, led by expert Lidia Chavinskaia from INRAE. "Wrapping up the theoretical session at the #3R Workshop NRW: New Insights and Perspectives!" What an enlightening session! Today’s deep dive into ethical frameworks around animal experiments has challenged us to think critically and innovate in our approaches. Here are some key takeaways: ❔ Ethicists analyze moral issues, concepts, and arguments, especially within emotionally charged and socially relevant debates. ❔ Ethics asks whether all animals and all humans, regardless of traits or abilities, deserve moral consideration. This question is crucial in animal and medical ethics. ❔ Animal experiments may be justified from a consequentialist standpoint if their benefits outweigh animal suffering, and if no viable alternatives meet the #3R ethical mandate (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement). Ethics provides a framework for assessing key factors, but scientific expertise is essential to evaluate animal sentience, alternative methods’ reliability, and research value.
