The digital landscape has transformed dramatically since my early days in building some of the world's first internet service providers. Data was seen merely as a way to gain insights or improve operations. Today, however, data has far evolved beyond that; it’s now an extension of who we are as individuals in the virtual world. Many of us leave our digital footprint everywhere we surf without considering what this can lead to. But here’s a timely reminder to ask ourselves this question: Do we genuinely own our data? The (unfortunate) reality is that our data—and, by extension, digital identities—is encased in beautiful “walled gardens.” These online platforms have been intentionally designed to trap us through the lack of data portability and transparency, restricting our ability to derive greater value from the data that is rightfully ours. Now, picture a world where everyone has broken free of the chains of these digital prisons. In this world, we all have full autonomy to own, protect, manage, and essentially dictate every aspect of our data, granting us greater privacy and true transparency in every data exchange. This future can only be made possible through innovative, secure, and trusted identity management solutions, precisely what we are doing here at Affinidi. Collaboration and education around cybersecurity have never been more critical, especially as data breaches continue to occur frequently across various industries. In Singapore, such incidents have quadrupled in the past two years, according to figures from a recent Surfshark report, with around 722,770 accounts being breached in the first quarter of 2024 alone. October was Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a timely reminder of the crucial need to stay secure in our digital world, especially in the face of increased cyber risks (no thanks to the rise of AI!) and a rapidly evolving global regulatory landscape. It was also a reminder that more needs to be done to complement existing cybersecurity guardrails and that a new approach to managing our sensitive and private data must be considered.
