This presentation delves into the crucial aspects of hydrogen offtake agreements, providing insights into price, quantity, delivery mechanisms, price reviews and contract flexibility Oxford Institute for Energy Studies Agnieszka Ason Follow Africa Hydrogen Hub (AHH) for more updates

𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆: 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀, 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 🟩 Access to affordable, reliable and clean energy is crucial for Africa’s development, yet 570 million people lack electricity and demand is set to rise 215% by 2030. Despite this, energy investments remain low and reliance on fossil fuels and biomass harms both economies and the environment. Integrating Africa Energy systems in Africa presents significant opportunities to improve investments, enhance resilience, and close energy gaps in the continent However, challenges remain in the generation, transmission and distribution sectors. Prior to now, opportunities and strategies has not been sufficiently researched in the Africa context, despite its enormous potential contributions. For this, we dedicate this policy brief to closing the existing knowledge gap. We will ask the following: 1️⃣1) How do integrating Africa energy systems present opportunities to improve investments and resilience in sustainable energy systems as well as close energy access gaps? 2️⃣2) Which progresses are currently ongoing in integrating Africa’s energy systems across the value chain – generation, transmission and distribution? 3️⃣3) Which challenges hinder progress in integrating Africa’s energy systems? 4️⃣4) Which policy ideology and frameworks will enhance the integrating Africa energy agenda. And which lesson can Africa learn from the European experiences? Find more here in the report here ⏬️⏬️ https://lnkd.in/dfVW3JKf Follow Integrated Africa Power (IAP) for more updates

RENEWABLE HYDROGEN PRODUCTION FROM WASTEWATER ⏬⏬⏬ 🟢 Aqueous phase reforming (APR) has been proposed during the last years as a promising technology to produce renewable hydrogen from carbon-laden water fractions. However, only small-scale set-ups have been used for the investigation so far, leading to a gap in technological knowledge. ▶️ In this work, a multi-component mixture representative of wastewater from lignin-rich hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) was evaluated at two different scales: a lab-scale facility (30–60 mL/h) to optimize the reaction conditions and, for the first time, a pilot-scale unit (max. 44 L/h) to validate the results. ▶️ On lab scale, the influence of reaction temperature, weight hourly space velocity and feed concentration on the process performance was investigated using a response surface methodology (RSM) approach via Box-Behnken design. It was found out that temperature was the most important variable to model the reactants conversion, carbon conversion to gas and hydrogen yield, with a significant agreement between the experimental and predicted values in the design space. ▶️ At pilot scale, the influence of temperature and pressure as well as catalyst stability were investigated. The urgent need to reduce carbon emissions have positioned #hydrogen as a promising alternative. But, the introduction of hydrogen into natural gas pipelines poses risks such as hydrogen-assisted materials degradation, which can compromise the integrity of pipeline materials Is this alternative still promising? • Comparison of Hydrogen Certification Schemes - Methodology and Results. Report from the IPHE (International Partnership for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in the Economy), @Hydrogen Certification Mechanisms (H2CM) Task Force This report presents the process, findings, and recommendations of the International Partnership for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in the Economy (IPHE) Hydrogen Certification Mechanisms (H2CM) task force. The task force contributed extensively to formulating definitions and descriptions of many terms and concepts relevant for hydrogen certification. This work is reflected in the initial 2023 and the revised 2024 version of the Hydrogen Certification 101 document, which was published under the auspice of the Hydrogen Breakthrough Agenda. The principal output of the task force was a comparison of 17 certification schemes and 4 support mechanisms across 11 countries or regions. Of these, 10 were existing certification schemes or support mechanisms for hydrogen and hydrogen derivatives and 11 were certification schemes or support mechanisms at different stages of development for the purpose of compliance (regulatory markets) or for the purposes of disclosure or reporting (voluntary markets). The comparison considered the following 4 key elements: 1️⃣(1) product attributes, 2️⃣(2) operational setup and procedures, 3️⃣(3) chain of custody model, and 4️⃣(4) the information technology (IT) used for the registry. • The Green Hydrogen Ambition and Implementation Gap 🟢Green hydrogen is critical for decarbonizing hard-to-electrify sectors, but it faces high costs and investment risks. Here we define and quantify the green hydrogen ambition and implementation gap, showing that meeting hydrogen expectations will remain challenging despite surging announcements of projects and subsidies. 🟢Tracking 190 projects over 3 years, we identify a wide 2023 implementation gap with only 7% of global capacity announcements finished on schedule. In contrast, the 2030 ambition gap towards 1.5 °C scenarios has been gradually closing as the announced project pipeline has nearly tripled to 422 GW within 3 years. ❓ What happened to green hydrogen projects recently? ❓ How much hydrogen do we need for 1.5°C? ❓ What are realistic future pathways given currently announced support policies? We structure these questions by the following three green hydrogen gaps. 1️⃣ 2023 implementation gap: Announced vs. realised projects 2️⃣ 2030 ambition gap: 1.5°C scenarios vs. announced projects 3️⃣ 2030 implementation gap: Announced projects vs. projects supported by announced policies. Check through the attached slides for the short summary of the paper. Adrian Odenweller, Falko Ueckerdt Follow Africa Hydrogen Hub (AHH) for more updates.
