Good things take time… 🎊 #AIRAscore for #brainvolumetry has been in use in Europe as a CE-marked medical device according to MDD since 2020. Since November, we now also have the new European approval according to #MDR - and we are very happy about it! Especially since, during the transition from the old to the new regulations, we weren‘t allowed to launch any disruptive product enhancements. Of course, we have by no means been idle in the meantime. Stay tuned for the coming months!

𝗜 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽. 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘁. Today, I attended another lecture on AI in radiology. The extremely important topic of “safety of AI tools” was also discussed. And then it came up again - the question of responsibility: 𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗜 𝗶𝘀 “𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆” 𝟵𝟱% 𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝟵𝟵% 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲? We all know, the diagnostic error rate among us doctors is often much higher than 1% across all medical fields, and not only during night shifts. So why this strict expectation of AI? No doubt: If a tool is worse than a radiologist, it has no justification for existence. But as long as a tool is better than the radiologist alone, it is a valuable addition to the radiologist’s visual assessment and a real benefit for patients. So why isn’t even 99% enough for us when it comes to AI assistance? And is this purely a medical perspective, or do patients see it this way too? I would really like to hear your opinions on this.

Congratulations! “Decades ago, John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton laid the groundwork for what would become one of the most transformative technologies of our time - artificial neural networks. At the time, their groundbreaking work was a visionary leap, yet it took decades of research, development, and perseverance for neural networks to become a driving force in today’s world. This week, they were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for their revolutionary discovery - a recognition that was long overdue. Today, machine learning with neural networks is not only transforming science and technology but has permeated our daily lives, from powering innovations in healthcare to influencing the way we interact with information. At AIRAmed, these very principles allow us to deliver precise brain volumetry insights to our customers worldwide, advancing healthcare in ways that were once unimaginable. Our heartfelt congratulations to John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton—well deserved!”

𝗗𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗹𝘇𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗿'𝘀 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮: 💡 Dementia is a syndrome associated with an ongoing decline of brain functioning. 💡 It is a collective name for symptoms like memory loss and confusion, which worsen over time. 𝗔𝗹𝘇𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗿´𝘀 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲: 💡 Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia. 💡 It accounts for about two-thirds of dementia cases. 💡 Alzheimer’s is a specific disease that gradually damages the brain over the years. It starts many years before symptoms begin to manifest. 💡 Early symptoms of Alzheimer’s are mild and don’t prevent someone from doing everyday activities by themselves. This is called Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). It’s often not possible at this stage to say for sure that the person’s symptoms are being caused by Alzheimer’s disease, as there could be many other causes. ❗ 𝗙𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁: It is important to raise awareness and to understand that people facing these diseases receive the compassion and support they deserve. __________________________________ At AIRAmed GmbH, we utilize advanced AI developed by radiologists to precisely quantify brain volume from MRI images. There are many risk factors for dementia. 𝗕𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟮𝟳 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝟳𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀, a recent publication from the University College London (UCL) identified #cardiovascular #health as a major emerging risk factor for #dementia. However, detecting early signs of dementia remains challenging. Following recent guidelines, #doctors use structural MRI of brains to detect changes in the brain related to the various causes of dementia. But the brain changes are usually subtle, and the human eye can easily miss them. This is where AI software #AIRAscore comes into play: it complements visual inspection by doctors with precise measurements of brain volume from MRI data. AIRAscore assists doctors in diagnosing dementia early, allowing for timely intervention to make a difference. It provides an easy-to-understand analysis report comparing the values of each patient to a collective reference of the same age. The doctor can depend on the distribution pattern of brain changes as presented in the report, in combination with clinical symptoms, and laboratory parameters to make an accurate diagnosis.

The World Health Organization’s (#WHO) global action plan on #dementia includes dementia risk reduction as one of its strategic action areas. Alzheimer’s disease and other cases of dementia start decades before the manifestation of dementia. When dementia appears, which is the clinical symptom of diseases like #Alzheimer, it is often too late for effective intervention. Therefore, to reduce the global burden of dementia we need to focus on pre-dementia stages. As such, it is crucial to have accurate tools to help doctors diagnose the disease early enough for preventive measures to be effective. One widely available tool is structural #MRI of the brain, but early changes are often too subtle for doctors to recognize. This is where AI solutions for measuring brain volume, such as #AIRAscore, become invaluable. #AIRAscore measures the volume of #brain regions and provides doctors with an easy-to-understand report, comparing each patient to the expected norm for their age and sex. With such accurate measurements, doctors can help patients at risk take preventive measures to stop dementia from manifesting itself. 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘀 ⚽🧠💪 Our brain acts like a well-coordinated team - with different players, positions and strategies. And each of us is part of this unique soccer team in our heads - with an unbeatable team spirit and the goal of always being mentally on the ball. ⚽ 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻: Like a striker in soccer, our brain has to react and make decisions at lightning speed. ⚽ 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆: Similar to defensive players, the brain blocks distractions and protects us. ⚽ 𝗠𝗶𝗱𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗢𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮: The strings come together in the midfield - our brain links memory contents. ⚽ 𝗣𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘁𝘆 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱: Under stress, the brain has to make smart decisions. ▶ With this in mind: think with your head, play with your heart and score your mental goals!
