Last week in Brussels I had the opportunity to take part in the panel discussion “Reflecting on the development of the EU’s capital markets – 7th edition of CMU KPIs report” at an AFME (Association for Financial Markets in Europe) event on the Capital Markets Union. We had a fruitful debate at the right point of time. Promoting capital markets development has rightly been put high on the agenda of European policymakers by various high-level reports as well as the European Commission, the Council and the Parliament. It was a pleasure for me to add the perspective of listed companies. The two overarching points are: ✅ Promoting the supply of capital for new corporate ventures is absolutely key in order to make Europe more competitive and to create the jobs of the future. Experiences show that improving the ecosystem for capital market finance strongly depends on how old age provision is organised and wealth building is incentivised. ✅ Regulation has to be practice-proof, not too burdensome and consistent so that companies can easily comply with primary and secondary market regulation without extensive legal advice. Otherwise, companies do not list or do not stay listed. We therefore applaud that the EU Commission wants to reduce the reporting obligation by 25 percent. This target should also be applied to capital market regulation with sustainability reporting and ESEF being two of the relevant points here. Thanks to AFME’s team for organising this important event and compiling the yearly data on state of play of European capital markets. The report presented at the event is a valuable basis for upcoming discussions and shows that things can be changed if there is the pollical will both on the European and the member states’ level. And a great thank you to Jacqueline Mills for the moderation, to Ludovic Aigrot, Martin Bresson, Reginald Vossen and Tanguy van de WERVE for the lively discussion. Looking forward to upcoming debates! #CMU #EU #CapitalMarkets #Regulation Deutsches Aktieninstitut
