Info
ALLEA is the European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities, representing more than 50 academies from over 40 EU and non-EU countries. Since its foundation in 1994, ALLEA speaks out on behalf of its members on the European and international stages, promotes science as a global public good, and facilitates scientific collaboration across borders and disciplines. Academies are self-governing bodies of distinguished scientists drawn from all fields of scholarly inquiry. They contain a unique human resource of intellectual excellence, experience and multidisciplinary knowledge dedicated to the advancement of science and scholarship in Europe and the world. Jointly with its members, ALLEA seeks to improve the conditions for research, to provide the best independent and interdisciplinary science advice available, and to strengthen the role of science in society. In doing so, ALLEA channels the expertise of European academies for the benefit of the research community, decision-makers and the public. Outputs include science-based advice in response to societally relevant topics, as well as activities to encourage scientific cooperation, scientific reasoning and values through public engagement. ALLEA is constituted as a non-for-profit association and remains fully independent from political, religious, commercial or ideological interests.

🌍 ALLEA was honored to participate in the #WSF2024, contributing to critical discussions on #ResearchAssessment, #AcademicFreedom, and the intersection of #science, #policy, and #society as a driver of #change in a rapidly evolving geopolitical landscape. 📥 Read our report 👇 and discover the initiatives #ALLEA brought to the table over the four-day event: 1️⃣ ALLEA hosted the side-event “Rethinking Research Assessment to Shape Innovative, Inclusive, and Impactful Science in Europe”, organised in collaboration with HUN-REN Headquarters. The initiative brought together members of the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment to discuss how research assessment can be reformed to better support innovative and inclusive science in Europe. 2️⃣ Thematic Session on Regional Perspectives in Research Assessment: ALLEA, as part of CoARA, partnered with the Global Young Academy(GYA) to present a thematic session, titled, “Research Assessment – Regional Perspectives and Unifying Actions”, which looked at the research assessment reforms taking place across the world. 3️⃣ ALLEA Executive Director Matthias Johannsen contributed to the Ministerial Roundtable IV – Freedom and Safety of Scientists, organised by International Science Council and UNESCO, highlighting ALLEA’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding institutional autonomy and academic freedom worldwide. 4️⃣ Dr Cliona Murphy, Associate Professor in Science Education at Dublin City University and Chair of ALLEA’s Working Group on Science Education discussed the role of scientific literacy in sustainable development at a session hosted by TWAS – The World Academy of Sciences, UNESCO, and The InterAcademy Partnership (IAP), during which she highlighted ALLEA’s recent statement advocating for the strengthening of science education curricula at the primary and post-primary level. The #WSF2024 Declaration called for efficient, trusted, and creative science and policy interfaces to respond to disruptive global transformations. https://lnkd.in/dVwSiXRJ #WSF2024 #ScienceAndPolicy #ResearchAssessment #Innovation #GlobalTransformation #ResearchandInnovationAction

🌍 The European Parliament approved European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's proposed new College of Commissioners, including Bulgarian #EkaterinaZaharieva who will be the first ever EU Commissioner-designate for Startups, Research, and Innovation – a major step forward in strengthening Europe’s innovation ecosystem! 🎆 It is the greatest pleasure for #ALLEA to extend its warmest congratulations to Ms. Zaharieva's on new role, which is of utmost importance, not only for the advancement of science and technology across Europe but also for addressing the pressing societal challenges we face in Europe and globally. 👏 We are particularly encouraged by Ms Zaharieva’s unwavering commitment to boosting Research and Innovation (R&I) investments and protecting the autonomy of the European Research Council (ERC) – key points that align with ALLEA’s priorities, as reiterated in our recent comments on the hearings. We greatly value Ms. Zaharieva’s ambition to radically simplify administrative procedures in the next Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (#FP10) and her special attention to #genderequality, early-career researchers, and #internationalcooperation, and look forward to working together with the new Commission to maintain Europe’s innovation potential and competitiveness on the global stage. https://lnkd.in/d8tcWvKS #EuropeanCommission #Innovation #Science #Startups #ALLEA

"For ALLEA, defending academic freedom and trustworthy science is one of our strategic priorities. Groundbreaking research depends on the ability of researchers to work without undue interference. And beyond researchers, institutional autonomy must also be protected." ALLEA's Executive Director, Matthias Johannsen, shared his insights into how we can protect the freedom and safety of scientists at the #Ministerial Roundtable, hosted by UNESCO, with scientists and policymakers at the #WSF2024.

#Learning to reflect on #values and #ethics at an early age contributes to moral character development and helps guide #children in their behaviour throughout their lives. It empowers children to make ethically informed decisions by equipping them with a robust #framework for assessing the ethical dimensions of various situations, thereby enabling them to act responsibly, compassionately, and ethically. 📰 Dr Cliona Murphy, Associate Professor in Science Education at Dublin City University’s School of STEM Education, Innovation and Global Studies, DCU Institute of Ethics and Chair of the Working Group Science Education of #ALLEA offered her thoughts today on "When to start ESD" at #WSF2024’s Education for Sustainable Development thematic session. In addition to such general ethics classes, stronger incorporation of research ethics as part of science education curricula will be needed if children are to be supported in developing the knowledge, skills, and values required to competently analyse and critically question the moral and ethical dimensions of scientific discoveries, new technologies, and experiments, her presentation showed. 🌍 The discussion referenced ALLEA's recent Statement on ‘Early Learning Opportunities for Shaping a Scientifically Literate Society’. 📺 Click here for a replay of the LIVE streaming: https://lnkd.in/dwC-4uJM #WSF2024 #ScienceAndPolicy #ResearchAssessment #Innovation #GlobalTransformation
