Composites: Pushing the Limits of Performance & Sustainability Composites are transforming industries by offering lighter, stronger, and more durable solutions compared to traditional materials. Their unique properties—such as high strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and design flexibility—make them essential in aerospace, automotive, energy, and infrastructure. But how do we ensure composites meet performance demands? Advanced testing methods like tensile, compression, shear, fatigue, and high strain-rate testing are crucial for evaluating material behavior under real-world conditions. These tests help manufacturers develop more reliable and damage-tolerant composites, ensuring safety and efficiency in critical applications. As the industry moves toward sustainability and circular economy solutions, composite innovation is playing a key role in reducing emissions and improving energy efficiency. The future is about smarter, stronger, and more responsible materials—and we’re excited to be part of it. 🚀 Join us at #JECWorld 2025, where we’ll explore the next era of composite innovation! #Composites #Innovation #Sustainability #AdvancedMaterials #Manufacturing #JECWorld2025

🎉We have reason to celebrate: Our medical device laboratory has received the new accreditation certificate! Medical devices are considered the “invisible heroes” of our everyday lives - they not only help us to get back on our feet after accidents or illness, but also improve our quality of life. To enhance mobility at any age, reliable implants are needed that can withstand our living conditions. 📃We have once again been recognized by DAkkS as an accredited testing laboratory for carrying out “Physical testing of medical devices and implants as well as visual testing of implants”. Using state-of-the-art technology, we test the fatigue and evaluate the wear behavior of knee, hip, ankle and shoulder joint implants under multiaxial loading. 👉A further 16 test procedures were added to our accreditation certificate, including: - Fatigue testing of hip cups according to ASTM F3090 - Dynamic loading of modular socket assemblies according to ASTM F2580 - Strength testing of femoral knee components according to ASTM F3210 - Adhesive strength of hydroxyapatite coatings according to ISO 13779-4 - Fatigue strength of impact-loaded surgical instruments according to internal test methodology The new accreditation is not only a sign of our expertise, but also of our reliability and independence. As an accredited testing laboratory, we can therefore continue to actively support manufacturers with approval tests and failure analyses to ensure that their implants meet the highest standards. Cybersecurity and Medical Devices 🔐 The European Commission’s latest Action Plan on cybersecurity for hospitals and healthcare providers raises a key question: Are we ready to secure connected medical devices? While the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) currently excludes medical devices under EU MDR, alignment is on the horizon. Plus, NIS2 is tightening cybersecurity obligations for healthcare. At Applus+ Laboratories, we believe cybersecurity should be a core pillar of medical device certification. With the FDA already enforcing stricter rules, Europe is following suit. ✅ Proactive CRA-based testing to anticipate future regulations ✅ Integrated compliance packages for CRA, MDR & FDA ✅ Future-proof security assessments for patient safety & market trust Cybersecurity isn’t optional — it’s essential. Let’s prepare together. You can read more here: https://lnkd.in/dVEFeBQ6 #ApplusLaboratories #Cybersecurity #MedicalDevices #Applus #PCIMPoC #Healthcare

Composite materials are increasingly playing a significant role in many user industries. While composite materials such as glass fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) or carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) are preferred in boat construction, mainly used in the leisure sector, traditional shipbuilding techniques for commercial transport continue to rely on metals such as steel or aluminium. The different choices of materials can be attributed to various factors. One advantage of composite materials in boat building is the weight reduction, as composite materials have remarkable strength at low weight. This is particularly advantageous for small boats, because the lower weight increases the manoeuvrability and speed. In contrast to many metals, composites are not susceptible to corrosion, which extends their durability and reduces maintenance. The production of composites in complex shapes gives designers more freedom to create modern and aesthetic designs. The large ships used in industrial shipping have to withstand extreme loads. Robustness and longevity are essential here - the use of metals brings with it a high level of resistance and the ability to transport heavy loads. The ongoing increase in research and development in the field of composite materials is opening up new opportunities in revolutionary shipbuilding and the possibility of transferring implemented construction methods from boatbuilding to shipbuilding. Currently, there is still a lack of experience in this area - and this is where we at Applus+ IMA, as an approved testing body for GERMANISCHER LLOYD (GL), Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and Bureau Veritas Group Veritas, among others, can contribute our expertise in the field of material and component testing. With our material tests, for example for the project ‘Solar Ship MS Tûranor PlanetSolar’ and the testing of composite materials for their load-bearing capacity, we have supervised numerous projects such as the GRP bridge in Friedberg, the first GRP road bridge in Klipphausen and the CFRP bridges in Herne. In a project with BaltiCo GmbH, a service provider and producer in the field of fibre-reinforced composites, we are testing their developed stiffening technology to make future series applications of composite materials in shipbuilding feasible. The demand-orientated use of these materials would reduce C02 emissions and make shipbuilding more sustainable. For more updates from the CU series ‘Composite material meets user industry’, stay tuned. Applus+ Laboratories #composites #shipbuilding #innovation

Success Story Elisabeth Scheel - Our just graduated materials tester! Congratulations! On 22 January, Elisabeth successfully completed her training as a materials tester in metal technology - we couldn't be prouder of her! According to Elisabeth, the last 3.5 years have ‘ passed in a flash’. Who would have thought that testing materials could be so exciting and instructive? To celebrate this great milestone properly, there was a cheerful coffee date with her mother. Her grandma even gave her a very special gift: a weekend of her choice to celebrate her new qualification in the right way! The best thing about it: Elisabeth will stay with us and continue her career at @Applus+ IMA. Last weekend, she even gave an insight into her training period at the Karrierestart in Dresden. This was the perfect opportunity to show future talents how exciting and varied the world of materials testing can be! We're really looking forward to the adventures ahead with you! @Applus+Laboratories #graduation #successstory #materials
