Rattan Lal, is there anyone who has contributed more to soil health? So happy that we him on our way to the climate conference #COP29 in Baku. We asked Leigh Winowiecki (CIFOR-ICRAF): "What are the three most important achievements of Prof. Lal in his career?" She didn't need to think for long. This is her answer: 1️⃣ Raising the level of awareness of the critical importance of soil health. 2️⃣ Hightlighting the important role of soil to sequester carbon - including in agricultural systems. 3️⃣ Winning the World Food Prize for soil centric approaches - recognizing that we need to transform food systems from the soil up. You two, Rattan Lal and Leigh Winowiecki, are an inspiration for many of us. May your energy, knowledge and kindness continue to spread across the globe for healthy soils and good communities to care for them. Let’ s recall why we need soils? Healthy soils are key contributors to solve many of all challenges. Thats good news that Diego Canga Fano from European Commission raised this at the two-day event of the European Mission Soil Week in Brussels. Azadeh is representing us there. We are happy that European Commission and European Union have developed the EU Soil Mission to address the challenges of soils. We look forward to following on having positive impacts on soil health. #EUMissions #MissionSoilWeek #MissionSoil #betterSoil #ForABetterWorld

This is my first time in Brussels, a city full of history, culture and a palpable energy ⚡️that has ignited my passion ❤️🔥 for sustainability. As the founder of betterSoil and full member of The Club of Rome , I have the honor of attending the Annual General Meeting of this „Think and Do Tank“. This was a two-day gathering of some of the brightest minds 🧠 addressing our planet's most pressing issues. The event is over and I am still struck by the diversity of those present - scientists, policy makers and other activists, all with a common goal: to create a sustainable future. I feel a mixture of excitement 🤗 and nervousness, perhaps a bit of 😧 . But no! Michelle Obama would say: Hope, never fear… 🤞🏽🤞🏽 I spoke about the importance of soil improvement. This time my emphasize was on grasslands! How grasslands can be regenerated and become healthier. 🖐️🙋🏻♀️ Why is it important? 👉👉 Because they are one of our powerful allies in the fight against climate change. I explained how our „Great Green Carpet“ initiative brings together regeneration of grasslands, pastoralists and communities to implement simple practices to restore soil vitality and promote sustainable agriculture. 🚶♀️I had come to Brussels not only to share my ideas, but also to meet with others who have similar visions for a sustainable future. The conversations that followed my talk were very inspiring, full of questions, insights and shared ideas. In that moment, surrounded by passionate people who believe in the power of change, I realized that I am not alone on this journey 🧳. The energy in the room was contagious, and as I left the room, I felt a new sense of purpose. This is just the beginning, and together with the Club of Rome and like-minded advocates, I am determined to make lasting improvements to the health of soils and our planet. 🌍 Brussels welcomed me with open arms andgave me a big surprise: to meet you Santiago Lefebvre. ☺️ I feel humbled and very much empowered to continue my mission, knowing that every step I took brought me closer to a greener, healthier world. ✅🍀🌱 #HopeForTheFuture #Brussels #betterSoil #GlobalCollaboration #WomenInSustainability #TogetherForThePlanet

Today is the first day of the General Assembly Meeting 2024 of the The Club of Rome! The Club of Rome is important because it promotes a global perspective on issues such as sustainability, environmental degradation, and socio-economic challenges, seeking innovative solutions to complex problems. Systems thinking is an approach that views problems as part of a larger system rather than in isolation. It's important because it helps identify interconnectedness and influences, leading to more effective and holistic solutions. I am involved with The Club of Rome to collaborate with like-minded individuals on addressing critical global challenges, advancing sustainable development, and fostering innovative thinking. Sustainability and business/startups can go hand-in-hand by integrating eco-friendly practices, creating sustainable products, and adopting a circular economy model, which can also drive innovation and meet consumer demand. #Sustainability #SystemThinking #Businesses #Startup #betterSoil #ForABetterWorld

😐 We are also affected! Donald Trump is now again the president of the USA. If the Trump administration pursues a policy of deregulation, it could lead to the weakening of laws and regulations that protect soil health. For example, reductions in regulations related to pesticide and fertilizer use might result in increased chemical runoff, which can degrade soil quality and harm surrounding ecosystems. ➕ Is there hope for good? Yes, there is always hope for positive change. 👏 There is an increasing global awareness of the importance of environmental issues, including soil health and sustainable agriculture. Movements advocating for climate action, biodiversity, and regenerative practices are gaining momentum. 👏 Advances in technology and agricultural practices are enabling more efficient and sustainable methods of farming. Innovations such as soil health monitoring tools, and sustainable pest management solutions are being developed to improve soil quality and reduce environmental impact. 👏 Grassroots movements and community initiatives are becoming more prominent. Local organizations, farmers, and citizens are working together to promote sustainable practices, share knowledge, and advocate for policies that protect soil and the environment. 👏 While political landscapes can change, there is potential for policy shifts that prioritize sustainability and environmental protection. Advocacy efforts, public pressure, and changing public sentiments can influence policymakers to adopt more sustainable practices. 👏 Many businesses are recognizing the importance of sustainability and are committing to environmentally friendly practices. Companies in the agriculture and food sectors are increasingly investing in sustainable sourcing, regenerative practices, and transparency in their supply chains. We go for positive change. Are you coming with us?!

This year we met François-Henri Pinault, the CEO of Kering and his team at ChangeNOW in Paris. He listened to us very attentively as we emphasised the importance of soil health and explained how we need to improve soils and to make them healthy again! Now it is wonderful news for us that land-use is part of Kering's sustainability journey. 🎉🎉 Marie-Claire Daveu, Paul Michon, Sebastien HUA, Soil goes luxury! We are looking forward to follow Kering's development on this path. Kering's Environmental Profit and Loss (E P&L) records and quantifies the environmental impact of the luxury group's activities across its entire value chain. Land use is a key component of this tool! By studying the impact of land use, we can better understand how agricultural practices, deforestation and soil degradation directly affect soil health. ☝ Why is it important? 👉👉 Healthy soils are the basis for biodiversity. Kering's focus on responsible land use practices can help promote systems that protect soil biodiversity, which is critical to nutrient cycling and overall ecosystem resilience. We can use this understanding to advocate for practices that promote soil biodiversity. 👉👉But this is not all! Soil is an important carbon sink, and poor land use practices can contribute to emissions. By promoting effective land use strategies and better soil management, we can play a role in mitigating climate change by addressing environmental issues that are critical to agriculture and forestry. 👉👉 And it's important that the big ones talk about the soil! And why? Because the attention given to the impact of land use through tools such as Kering's E P&L raises awareness of the interconnectedness of business practices and environmental health. Thank you, ChangeNOW, for bringing us together at the conference. 🎉 🎈 #betterSoil #SustainableLandUse #HealthySoilHealthyFuture #Kering #SustainabilityStrategy

As I walked through an art exhibition by Stiftung Nantesbuch gGmbH that featured works inspired by nature, I was mesmerised by how the artists interpreted the soil. Each photography told a story - not only about the earth beneath us, but also about the intricate relationships it nurtures. The soil, which is often overlooked, holds a deep beauty waiting to be discovered. When I first started looking into soil health, it felt like a scientific endeavour focused on nutrients and fertility. But now I see that artists depict soil in a way that captured my imagination. Vibrant colours, the elements of nature and haunting meanings transformed soil from a mere resource into a source of inspiration and creativity. 😍 The image below is an impressive work by an artist. SHe created an impressive terrarium in which soil, plants and light merge together, showing not only how important healthy soil is, but also how it sustains life and produces incredible beauty. By merging art and earth, we can engage people on an intuitive level and invite them to feel connected to this essential element of life. Art not only highlights the importance of soil in a visually stunning way, but also connects us emotionally to a subject that often seems abstract. By combining soil and art, I have found a new appreciation for both and have sparked conversations that resonate beyond the gallery, inviting everyone to recognise the beauty and importance of the soil beneath our feet.
