🌍 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴? We dove deep into the registries of 6 major carbon credit standards to analyze how many 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 have been certified so far. While we could only review publicly available projects, the findings reveal how various standards are being adopted. Here are the 𝗧𝗼𝗽 𝟯 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 from our analysis: 1️⃣ 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗼 𝗱𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝟱𝟮 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀. Why? It was the first standard to support biochar carbon removal, and its strong partnership with NASDAQ gives it credibility and visibility. Most projects are located in Europe and America. 2️⃣ 𝗖-𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝟮𝟲 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀. Known for certifying a wide range of projects, including many smaller-scale, artisanal biochar producers. It’s widely adopted across Europe and Asia. 3️⃣ 𝗩𝗖𝗦 (𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮) 𝗵𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝟵 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀, 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝘀𝗶𝗮. While it’s one of the largest global carbon credit standards, biochar adoption under VCS remains relatively modest, but it’s growing steadily in regions like Asia. 🌟 And what about the others? 𝗥𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 (𝟰 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀): A newer standard with focus on improving MRV and certification durations. First projects in Spain and the UK. 𝗜𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 (𝟬 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀): Their protocol was recently released, and with extensive funding, Isometric is taking a different approach by focusing on serving the buyer side of the market. The first projects are seemingly already in the process of certification. 𝗖𝗔𝗥 (𝟬 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀): Focused on US and Canada, but no biochar projects appear in their registry—yet. 📝𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆: Puro dominates today’s biochar carbon credit landscape, but new standards like Riverse and Isometric could shake things up soon. Meanwhile, C-Sink is carving out a space for smaller-scale producers. 💡 Certification is a critical part of funding biochar projects, and understanding the trends is the first step toward navigating this complex landscape. 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿 𝗕𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗸: 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀 Three European companies focused on biochar product development have secured multi-million-euro investments in the past few months! 📈 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: Biochar products are the missing link to scaling the biochar industry. While production has been the focus for years, it’s these products that will unlock demand, open new markets, and truly accelerate growth. 🔎 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵: Carboganic (€1.5M): Biochar-based additives for plastics. carbogenics (£0.5M): Biochar product for biogas production. ecoLocked (€4M): Biochar-based admixtures for concrete. 💡 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲? These product developers could drive biochar adoption in two key ways: 1️⃣ Buying biochar from producers across Europe to integrate into their products. 2️⃣ Selling their technology to biochar producers, enabling them to create high-value products without conducting extensive research themselves. This momentum signals an exciting time for the biochar community. Scaling product innovation will not only drive profitability but also strengthen biochar's role as a climate solution. 🌍 What’s your take on this shift? Let’s discuss in the comments! 💬

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿: 𝗔 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🌍 Are you an industrial company that hast large heat and electricity demand? Did you know that biochar, an ancient method of converting waste biomass, is emerging as a leading carbon removal solution? 🔹 Durability & Affordability: Biochar can lock away carbon for thousands of years, making it one of the most durable and cost-effective solutions—starting at $100/ton compared to $1,000/ton for direct air capture (DAC). 🔹 Big Players are Onboard: Companies like Microsoft and Mitsubishi are actively investing in biochar for its dual benefits: carbon sequestration and soil enhancement. Exomad Green, a biochar producer, delivered an impressive 83,000 tons in 2024 alone! 🔹 Scaling the Impact: With a global potential to draw down 2.6 billion tons of CO₂ annually, biochar not only mitigates emissions but also improves soil fertility and helps fund wildfire prevention efforts. Yet, investment in biochar still lags behind newer technologies. It’s time for the spotlight to shine on this sustainable, impactful solution. 🌟 #Biochar #CarbonRemoval #Sustainability #NetZero
It’s fitting that a South American company is leading the way, because some of the earliest evidence for biochar use comes from studies of Amazonian soils. The additive is produced by heating crop residues and other biomass in a low-oxygen environment. https://buff.ly/3Bhswsz

🌟 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝘆? 𝗟𝗲𝘁’𝘀 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗶𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻. Selling biochar can feel like a tough nut to crack, but with the right product strategy, it’s absolutely possible! Here’s how successful producers are tackling the market: 🏢 1.) Leverage co-benefits within your organization Use biochar internally to enhance products like soil substrates, compost or even concrete. This creates value beyond direct sales. 🤝 2.) Build long-term partnerships Collaborate with organizations that can embed biochar into their products—such as soil producers, animal feed manufacturers or concrete producers. These partnerships provide stability and scale. 🚀 3.) Invest in product development and marketing Consider targeting high-value markets in agriculture and industry. A strong R&D budget combined with a marketing and sales strategy for final products can make all the difference. 💡 Pro Tip: Many producers follow a multi-product strategy to reduce dependency on one product. 📈 Key Sales Channels: Direct sales to large-volume buyers in agriculture and industry remain the dominant channel. Online shops and wholesalers play only a minor role today. 🚩 Beware of selling unprocessed biochar: It’s hard to move unless you can offer it at very low prices and high volumes. 🎯 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆 Focus on building a sustainable, diverse sales strategy. As more producers enter the market, average biochar prices are likely to drop over time. Stay competitive by innovating and creating value-added products. 👉 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁? 𝗟𝗲𝘁’𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂!

𝗧𝗼𝗽 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 One week ago, we met a lot of people at our booth of German Biochar Forum in Berlin and during the accompanying programme. Now we share our last post on takeaways we’ve gained on the broad topic of Corporate Sustainability trends. 𝗧𝗢𝗣 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 🍃 EU’s #CSRD („Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive“) is moving the industry → corporates seek to create business cases that inset BCR within their value chains 🍃 𝗖𝗗𝗥 𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: to reduce the footprint of a product, the methodology product carbon footprint (PCF) can be used and removals can be accounted for as long as they are taking place within the lifecycle of that product. This is a measure to directly reduce the PCF. In general, BCR cannot be counted against outside of value chain emissions, but used in communication to show a company’s ambition. 🍃 𝗖𝗗𝗥 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: if companies report on CDR it must be reported separately from the emission reductions and include the sink process and storage pool, according to the ISO and GHG Protocol standards. 🍃 𝗖𝗗𝗥 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: focus on co-benefits. 🍃 𝗖𝗗𝗥 𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: follow the GHG Protocol for Cities → carbon sinks can already be reported and used in climate targets 🌻 With more companies being required to report on ESG in the coming years, they start to better understand what emissions they are causing opens their view on the solutions that BCR provides Some final words to the BCR Community: 💡💡 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀! by sharing your needs and to let them increase their personnel capacity —> that way policy can be shaped in the right way and knowledge about CDR can spread faster. Thank you German Biochar e.V. (German Biochar Association) and International Biochar Initiative and all other volunteers and advocates for the awesome community effort for creating this place for exchange!
